Pons_Aelius, to memes in When you set your alarm every 5 minutes in the morning.

Hate to sound like a parent, then you need to go to bed earlier.

I haven't used an alarm in about a decade because I value sleep. Most of us live in a constant state of sleep deprivation and it is one of the worst things you can do for your health.

algorithmic content

That's my point. I am not knocking the feature, just the marketing push now to call an algorithm feed AI.

I doubt there has been any actual change in the feed just the term.

It is buzzword bullshit.

Pons_Aelius, to memes in I have a snacking problem

Comfort eating is one of the hardest addictions to break because unlike drugs, you cannot go cold turkey and stop.

Most of us have never actually been hungry and eat because it is lunchtime or because we are sad and want to distract ourselves.

What worked for me was fasting. It was incredibly hard at first but it did reset my relationship with food. My stomach now decides when and what I eat, not my mind.

When it happens naturally we call it going viral.

When it is an organised attempt to go viral what should we call it?

Smallpox blankets...

Is a quote a meme?

In the original definition of meme, yes.

Pons_Aelius, to asklemmy in What's the most scared you've ever been in your life?

When I was working the graveyard shift at a service station and a junkie put a knife to my throat and suggested that the money in the register should really be in his pocket.

Pons_Aelius, to asklemmy in Effect of a gravity assist on person, or whatever, in spaceship

No,

It is purely for dramatic effect.

In a gravity assist ( to be technical using a hyperbolic orbit of a large mass to change direction and gain velocity) the object is still following the curvature of space time. So the change in direction is affecting all particles in the object at the same time.

It is the same as people in the ISS orbiting the earth, they do not have to lean in the curve as they are following the curvature in spacetime around the planet. The only difference is one is a hyperbolic orbit (gravity assist) while the other is a parabolic elliptical orbit (ISS)

Pons_Aelius, to asklemmy in Those who didn't initially want kids, but got influenced/pressured by their partners, how that played out?

I was pressured by my partner to have children. I had said from the outset of the relationship that I didn't want kids. That was all fine, for the first year-18 months, Then things started to change.

how that played out?

We did not have children, we are no longer together.

Cool. Spin up your own instance. You are now in compleat control. Post what ever you want.

Next up: Will you cry censorship if other instances decide to defederate with you?

Pons_Aelius, (edited ) to upliftingnews in Sucking carbon dioxide out of the sky is moving from science fiction to reality

Quote:

So Occidental Petroleum, a big American oil company, they are really good at a kind of oil production that involves injecting CO2 underground to squeeze more oil out of old wells. So when they heard about this technology to pull carbon out of the sky, they thought, wait; this could work for us. They plan to put some carbon underground just to store it.

This is worse than a zero sum game. Every litre of oil produces multiple litres of CO2 gas.

Sorry, but not that uplifting at all.

Pons_Aelius, to upliftingnews in Sucking carbon dioxide out of the sky is moving from science fiction to reality

I agree but this is not the way to do it.

Oil companies pumping it underground is just a way for them to justify business as usual.

Removing co2 from the atmosphere requires energy input, If that energy comes from a co2 producing source it will never work.

Developing nuke/wind/solar co2 extraction is possible but this is astroturfing of the highest order.

Then they are shit out of luck.

Which is cheaper:

Check a bag.

I have seen so many thread saying how bad that instance is but every time I ask for links proving how bad they are I have never see anything worth the hate.

Can you provide some examples?
