Pons_Aelius,

we need teleportation frankly

Sorry but not in this universe.

It is the same for pretty much all the narrative hand waves that are used to push the story forward. This is not knocking SF but to temper expectations.

Deep sleep/human hibernation.

FTL travel of any description, including FTL communication.

Sentient, Self-aware AGI.

Directed energy weapons and EM shields.

Pons_Aelius,

The biggest for me is not a person but a group. The people who settled the islands of the pacific.

Pons_Aelius,

since athletes can’t be paid,

Remind me again, what is it called when the people generating the wealth are not compensated?

It can actually be a problem for the schools, since athletics isn’t allowed to be profitable. They have to spend all the money athletics brings in on athletics, which is why the athletics department ends up with all the fancy new buildings.

Ah yes, that sounds like a great benefit for students getting an education. Also for the academic staff. Must be great to work at a university as a lecturer and know the football coach earns multiples of your salary.

Pons_Aelius,

Some variation of the below:

Can I have your phone with the messaging apps unlocked?

Can I log into your personal email?

Can I see your tax returns?

Can I set up cameras and microphones in your house?

Can I place a GPS tracker on your car?

No matter who actually did it. Russia would blame Ukraine/NATO/USA/The West in general, together and separately in rotation.

After that I have no real idea, who would succeed. There would be a massive power struggle both in the government and military.

There is a strong possibility that several of the autonomous regions within the Russian federation would try to break away. There is about a 20% chance of a civil war because of this.

And about a 1% chance of nukes being used.

A divorced couple divides their Beanie Baby collection in court, 1999 (lemmy.world)

Full caption: Nov 5, 1999, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA: Attorney Frank Totti looks over papers while his client Frances Mountain sorts out Beanie Babies with her ex-husband Harold Mountain in Judge Gerald Hardcastle’s Family Courtroom in Las Vegas November 5. The couple, who were divorced four months ago, were ordered to divide up...

Pons_Aelius,

"I'm still charging the full rate for this." Muses the divorce lawyer.

The doctors at the hospital where this happened were also doing autopsies and would often go directly from an autopsie to the delivery ward without washing their hands.

The midwives did not perform autopsies.

It was not that the midwives' hands were especially clean, it was that the Dr's hands were very contaminated.

Pons_Aelius,

Most people don't want the correct answer, they just want their preconceived biases to be confirmed.

Pons_Aelius,

Not surprising really, humans haven't changed in that time.

Pons_Aelius,

yep. The bigger the sub, the worse it was.

You would get some niche subs were there was some decent discussion but once one passed about 100K subscribers there would be a noticeable downward spiral.

Pons_Aelius,

There ARE things where you can't "bias" your way out of it, things that are objectively correct and incorrect.

There are still people who believe the world is flat.

The things you believe are objectively correct and incorrect are not the same for everyone.

That is the problem,

Reality is not the same for everyone and many people believe they have the right to enforce their version of reality on others.

What is your unpopular flim opinion

I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds

Pons_Aelius,

Pretty much every American war film is a pro-war movie.

Pons_Aelius,

Close encounters is a much better film.

Pons_Aelius,

They are called wasps. (IIRC: Ants evolved from wasps.)

Pons_Aelius,

And you ban tell everybody, that this is your song...

Pons_Aelius,

It is possible for an event to be both sad and uplifting. A child is channelling their grief to help others.

The pet died, that is undoubtedly sad but it is also a fact of life.

The way the child is reacting to it is uplifting.

Pons_Aelius,

As the article states. Slavery is an aspect of Roman society that is so often hand waved away or basically ignored by pretty much every historical discussion or documentary.

When you hear about Julius Caesar in Gaul: one third of the entire population was sold into slavery over the course of a few years.

The entire roman economy ran on slavery.

Spartacus is a staple of modern media thanks to Giovagnoli's novel and its translation into English but the brutality with which it and the other two "Slave wars" were put down in the space of 60 years are rarely touched on.

Pons_Aelius,

We only need a few big instances

Who is this we? Who are you speaking for?

Why do we need so many smaller ones?

Why do you care?

How are smaller instances impacting you?

You are not on the largest instance. Why not?

Why are you hanging out on a small instance...

Pons_Aelius,

To me we only need the largest 2, anymore is silly. Move to one of them.

(just taking you idea to its logical conclusion)

Pons_Aelius,

Nah. then they will charge the child (and try them as a adult...) for distributing child porn images.

Pons_Aelius,

That is where I got the (fucked up) idea from.

IIRC: In USA. Teen sent nude pic to his girlfriend, both 16. He was charged with distributing child porn and put on a sex offender register for life.
