Smooth, to prevent snow from building up in the grooves!

Unfortunately, it also made it so they couldn't grip the ice and would spin fruitlessly in place.

To be fair, if I'm a failed prototype scientific machine, 'Buried under the shifting Antarctic ice and lost forever' is a helluva grave.
