Right? I always think of submarines as small and cramped, and while they are certainly cramped, they're not generally small. Lot of machinery goes into those beasts.

Mind mentioning where I said this was the first test?

I think OP is just grabbing posts from “fakehistoryporn” off Reddit and not understanding the difference…

You do realize that's not the kind of material "fakehistoryporn" posts, right? It would be labeled something more like "Experimental worm-removal by shockwave, 1865"

Just another of the (probably hundreds) of shitty meme communities OP mods or posts too. At this point I’m just blocking their whole account.

That's what the block button is there for.

The invention of the phone and its consequences was an unprecedented disaster for the human race

The elephant was taken from a civilian zoo and pressed into service. 'Conscripted' seemed appropriate.

I came across a series of good monowheel pictures, couldn't just pick one!

Mixture of places. Most I get from Rarehistoricalphotos. Many I get from Wikimedia commons. Some I google, when I have a piece of historical trivia I know but no picture to go with it. When I feel adventurous, I search online national archives, found some good Ethiopian pics in the Polish archives a while back.

If memory serves, only the actual expedition members died, while the crew aboard the Terra Nova survived.

Smooth, to prevent snow from building up in the grooves!

Unfortunately, it also made it so they couldn't grip the ice and would spin fruitlessly in place.

Bit of a problem machine, this one.

WW1 is when drones were first invented, that's why you only see the one (pigeon) model. Nowadays we have all sorts of advanced models - bluejays, crows, vultures...

The lance is actually interesting too - it's not traditional, not a wooden pole with a metal head. It's all-metal - a hollow tube of rolled steel.

No, no, don't worry, they were Roommates and Very Good Friends

Not sure about this particular pic, but I know that porters at this time would carry multiple filled baskets like this, and that human beings can carry and balance a surprising amount of weight on their heads.

Time would prove that the kindness the indigenous people of New Guinea had shown to the Americans and Australians was real, but that their supposed “loyalty,” much touted by Allied propaganda, was not. The truth is that no one ever asked the native people their point of view. After the war ended, researchers seeking oral testimonies from New Guineans who had lived through the war were astonished to learn that the native peoples were united in one opinion: that they wanted the “whites”—among whom they included Japanese, Australians, and Americans—just to go away and leave them alone.

"No, we won't let you suffer. No, we don't want you here."

Not much. The peoples of the Congo were very isolated from one another, and the Belgians put significant effort in keeping them that way. You had small uprisings, but they were generally local, and dealt with... extremely brutally.
