Quetzalcutlass,

The influence of Newt Gingrich on American politics can’t be understated. He may not have started the dirty tricks and aimless obstructivism, but he codified the tactics and brought them mainstream in the nineties.

Quetzalcutlass,

Has everyone already forgotten about Cambridge Analytica, which scraped data from tens of millions of Facebook users and used it to microtarget swing voters in several countries with propaganda and misinformation to get them to either vote for right-wing candidates or stay home on election day?

Quetzalcutlass,

Miami-Dade and Palm Beach says hello. A 537 vote margin in a few Florida counties decided the 2000 US Presidential Election.

One wonders how different the world would be today if George W. Bush didn’t get that first term.

(Fun fact: the usual chicanery to depress Democratic votes also happened in 2000 - voter roll purges, roadblocks in Democratic areas, too few voter areas in cities… In many ways it was a trial run for the bullshit Republicans pull now)

Quetzalcutlass,

Ubuntu used to ship out free installation CDs. Since it was free, I figured why the hell not. Played around with it, loved it, but didn’t use it for much more than messing around.

A decade later those fond memories enticed me to buy a Raspberry Pi and play around with Linux again, and a few years later it became my main OS. It’s just so much fun to tinker with in a way that Windows never was, and nowadays it runs almost everything without a problem.

Quetzalcutlass,

I 100% agree. There’s just so much to do and too much of your day is spent as a time tax maintaining what you already have. There are several unlocks to reduce this, but they come far too late in a playthrough in my opinion.

I find a time control/clock-stopping on demand mod almost mandatory for me to be able to play without stressing, especially when playing with expansion mods that more than double the amount of content in the game.

Same, either Halo and the Silent Cartographer or Halo 2 and Metropolis. Those two levels are my video game comfort food.

Secret service agents moments after the 1981 assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan. (lemmy.world)

Excerpt: On this day in 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest at the side entrance of the Washington Hilton on Connecticut Avenue by John Hinckley Jr. Reagan was walking to his limousine after a speech to AFL-CIO leaders when Hinckley, 25, who was standing among a group of reporters, fired six shots, hitting Reagan...

How would he be a martyr? Hinckley didn’t shoot him because of his politics, he shot him because he was insane and thought killing a president would make Jodie Foster notice him. He was originally planning to go after Jimmy Carter.

They also charge developers for the privilege of compiling their programs for Apple platforms* (and using one of the worst IDEs known to man).

^(*Yes, you can technically compile apps with a free account, but AFAIK they will be restricted to only run on the developer’s machines unless you shell out $99 a year.)

He also has a contract term limiting how badly fights can go for him. But apparently that’s common for action stars, so whatever.

I did find it amusing that during his feud with the Rock, they had to count the exact numbers of hits each took while fighting each other on screen so neither would look bad. It’s like, Vin is a D&D nerd who turned his horror franchise into a science fantasy opera and started his own video game company because he was frustrated at bad movie tie-ins (side note: Escape From Butcher Bay is one of, if not the, best prison games ever made). Embrace nerdity, reject this toxic masculinity crap. There’s a massive audience for that thing now - just look at Ryan Reynolds, nobody talks shit about him being a massive nerd.

Though this lawsuit is about events from thirteen years ago, so he was already too far gone early in his career. If it’s true, fuck him. Rapists and sexual assaulters get no sympathy.

We used to have a nonpartisan office dedicated to researching and informing Congress on political and scientific issues and the effects of prospective legislation. You can probably guess what happened to it.

Quetzalcutlass,

This is why modding games is great. Most of the hard engine and framework stuff is already done for you, so you get to focus on content creation (the “fun” part).

Still difficult, but it requires a fraction of the time and effort that making a game from scratch would take.

It’s only available if your instance has updated to Lemmy 0.19, but you can download all of your account data and even use it to transfer your subs and settings to a new account on the same or another instance.

I’m also on Sync, but there are a few things I’m unhappy with that have me looking at other apps.

First, the dev isn’t active on Lemmy. He’ll make an announcement post every few months and reply to comments for a couple of days before going radio silent again. I’m worried he’ll abandon the app out of disinterest or low motivation, like he did for a year after his UI refresh wasn’t well received back in the Reddit days.

Second, that inactivity extends to app development. Major, easily replicated bugs (like the crash on startup if you have “hide account names” enabled) linger for weeks to months without a patch. This also goes back to the Reddit days and isn’t new behavior.

Finally, he puts basic app features behind a paywall with a much higher price than normal IAPs ($16/year or $99 to permanently enable them). This includes features that used to be free in Sync, like tagging users or color highlights. It also includes things that Lemmy already does for free, like backing up subscriptions (though that was only recently added to Lemmy, so he might move it to the basic app eventually). Just removing ads with no other benefits costs $20, which is more than any app I’ve ever used charges.

Orcas are also known as killer whales. The joke is that the prosecutor is trying to get him to call himself a killer.

Quetzalcutlass,

Just be aware that this can cause horrible genetic defects, like the lack of a delta brainwave.

Quetzalcutlass,

“You said to tell you nothing because, and I quote, ‘spoilers’. I’m just here to see what you were like before it happened.”

I would totally send someone backwards in time just to mess with myself.
