TLDW: James Somerton is a gay man and a YouTube content "creator" who has recently been outed as a plagiarist by Hbomberguy and Todd In The Shadows. He primarily steals content from other lesser known queer content creators which just makes his plagiarism all the more insidious.

He has also strangely been proven to be guilty of spreading pseudohistory in which he changes details of historic events.

He has also been accused of a Patreon scam by making a (now deleted) video pleading with his subscribers on YouTube that he can't make ends meet and he'll have to stop making videos if he doesn't get more Patreon subscribers. He got 1200 new patrons from that video. He apparently immediately purchased an $8000 camera afterwards which people describe as a "bizarre purchase" for someone who was just in financial dire straits. Also, there was no evidence of him having suffered a drop in subscribers that he claimed was the reason for his financial situation.

He has also been accused by YouTuber and Nebula creator Jessie Gender of transphobia. She says that James Somerton has gone out of his way to erase any queer content creators who were not cisgender gay men, and that he intentionally misgenders other transgender content creators constantly.

It seems like the inciting incident for all of these YouTube and Nebula content creators to go after him was James' application to become a Nebula content creator. I suppose they started gathering evidence to provide against his membership and they ended up finding so much that they created these videos and levied formal accusations.

Here's a slightly more in-depth read from Wikitubia for anyone interested in reading further: https://youtube.fandom.com/wiki/James_Somerton#Controversies

Guys, it's not one or the other. We can have trees and algae tanks. Trees can still offer all of the benefits they do like shade and beauty while algae tanks can be used to increase fresh oxygen. Algae is much better at absorbing CO2 than trees and providing clean air which is a big problem in a busy city.

What's the best way to have a .bashrc that I can use throughout systems?

So, I just found out about a programme called SynthShell which kind of does the work for you and gives you a nice looking shell, the thing is that this also creates some config files and other stuff in my system, instead of just one .bashrc file to edit. What would be the best way to learn to have a nice looking bash where I can...

You need to learn bash scripting. Also, there are a few default files that the .bashrc uses which can be helpful to compartmentalize the custom things you do to it so that it's easier to undo if you screw something up. To do that, just add this to the bottom of your .bashrc

if [ -f ~/.bash_custom ]; then
    . ~/.bash_custom
fi

What that will do is check if the .bash_custom file exists and then run the .bash_custom file in your home directory and apply anything in there. Also, you can call the file whatever you like, but bash does have some defaults that it will check for and run them without editing the .bashrc at all. It's kind of hard to find a list of the the files that it automatically checks for, but I know that .bash_aliases is one of them, and I think it checks .bash_commands as well, but I'm not entirely sure. Either way, you can force it to check your custom one by using the code above.

Then you can create the file and add any custom things in there that you like. For example, I like to frequently update through the terminal but running sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade && sudo apt autoremove && flatpak upgrade was a bit tedious and I wanted a bit less feedback so I made a custom alias for my personal use.

alias update='echo "Updating packages..."; sudo apt update -y &> /dev/null; echo "Packages updated."; echo "Upgrading packages..."; sudo apt upgrade -y &> /dev/null; echo "Packages upgraded."; echo "Cleaning up packges..."; sudo apt autoremove -y &> /dev/null; echo "Packages cleaned up."; echo "Updating flatpaks..."; flatpak update -y &> /dev/null; echo "Flatpaks updated."'

Which hides most of the text from updating and just gives me feedback on what it's currently doing if I don't really care to know all of the details. So now I just run update in the terminal and plug in my password and it updates and upgrades everything in a human readable way.

There's a lot that can be done with bash scripting, like editing files, iterating over files and directories, setting environment variables. It's basically a full programming language so the limits are mostly your imagination.

I don't think it has to do with being female or anime. I think OP is saying that they're either a transgender woman or a femboy who is still in the closet

I'm so tired of people thinking that nihilism (Nietzsche's main philosophy for those unaware) is depressing. It's not at all, it's actually very hopeful and liberating. Nihilism can basically be boiled down to "nothing matters" which sounds depressing, but what it really means is that "nobody can tell you what matters from your perspective, only you can decide what matters to you". It was considered depressing and was railed against by the public at the time because it goes against religious teaching which tells you that religion matters objectively and unquestioningly.

It's extremely liberating even today despite religion not having a choke hold on society as much as it did during Nietsche's time. It's liberating because if what truly matters to you is shitposting on Lemmy, then that's great! Go live your most meaningful existence! Enjoy yourself and be proud of your accomplishments in that field! You choose your own worldview and what matters to you, and that's obviously a very a positive thing, it's not depressing or morose or narrow-minded and I'm tired of people just boiling it down to "Nihilism is for depressed people".

Yeah, either put quotes around it '/like this/you can incorporate/spaces/into your paths' or /just\ escape/your\ spaces/like\ this

I was and continue to be shocked that there are conservative Star Trek fans. I just can't wrap my head around how they justify it. It's very clearly painting socialism and left leaning ideas as the universally correct ideals which will lead us to a utopia.

lol but it's definitely a typo. If you click on the link the actual article says "700 year old".

Avery would absolutely deliver that line exactly as you wrote it. His acting in DS9 is so delightfully unhinged, way over the top and campy, I love it!

It makes sense to either go general to specific or specific to general. MM-DD-YYYY is neither.

Ezarr is a pretty great little project for getting started. Just clone the repo and follow the README and it should just be plug and play.

Oh god... Imagine the horse bolting after hearing the gunshot and you're falling from your own height plus the height of the horse. I bet a lot of necks were broken from this experiment before they cancelled it.

You can just choose not to use it. They still release everything through their regular repositories for now.

But then why is it available in my command line terminal as a command that I can use? Like when I type do and then hit TAB twice to list commands that match the output is do done dofsck etc... but when I just enter do in the command line or do --help I get bash: syntax error near unexpected token 'do'

I would assume that since I can run sudo apt update that I could also run do apt update where it would run it not as a super user. I know just apt update would do that too, but I'm just so curious if it's possible to use do as a user-level sudo or what else it might be able to do.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Serious question, what exactly does do do? In my terminal I can see that do is a command but all I get is bash: syntax error near unexpected token do'and obviously with such a common name it's hard to find information on google about whatdo` actually does.

The thing is that if someone is bothering you, then you need to go to the teacher. If you set a precedent that one kid is bothering you, then the teacher is more likely to believe you if you ever snap and hit your bully they'll be more understanding. But if you never say anything and then suddenly snap, then obviously it looks from the outside like you're the bully.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

I currently work part-time as a bus driver and I just wanna say that it's incredibly hard to determine who is right or wrong when you didn't see what happened and you're just going by what each kid says. If you only see the tail end of a fight, you might wrongfully think the kid retaliating is the bully. 99% of the time it's easier to just separate the kids and/or punish them both equally since it's impossible to determine who the victim and the perpetrator is. It sucks, it feels really bad, but that's the reality of the situation.

Egg - a transgender person that has yet to come out of their "shell".

When a person first makes the realization that they might be transgender, it's referred to as "cracking your egg" in the trans community.

Also, in popular culture it's commonplace to say that a person who is in denial is "putting up walls", so an egg is like a type of wall that completely surrounds you. Cracking your egg involves tearing down those walls.

I personally love that these boys can still fully identify as men and use he/him pronouns while still exploring their personal styles and fashion choices. Men deserve the freedom to explore and be creative with their appearance. Being pretty shouldn't be exclusive to women!

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Yeah but C makes more sense. 0-10 is cold but not freezing, 10-20 is cool, 20-30 is warm, 30-40 is hot, 40+ is "you're gonna die of heat exposure! Get inside, what are you doing?!" increasing in urgency with the number. If it's in the negatives, it's the same as the 40+ except "cold exposure".

Depends where you live, I guess. I don't really consider -20 to be dangerous but I live in Canada so I know how to dress for cold weather.
