Smorty,

To me, it looks like they’re about to bite into a kitkat

Smorty,

True. But that even hurts me… I’m 18

Gnome completely different and buggy after update (Debian)

I just ran an update, as one does with apt update and upgrade. Afterwards all my monitors, bedies that one ancient 4 by 3 monitor stopped working. That 4 by 3 displays gnome at a lower resolution then usual. So I assumed that this has something to do with the nvidia drivers (has happened many times before). So I run...

Smorty,

I’m back from trying that reinstall with aptitude, and it keeps getting file sizes wrong. It says, that reinstalling all software will take 0 Bytes. After not finding some sources, it tells me that the unpacked packages will combine to 0 Bytes again:

“Es konnten keine Quellen gefunden werden” meaning, that it couldn’t find the sources for a specific program. I already ran sudo aptitude update so that is not the issue. Soo maybe I really do need to reinstall the entire system?

Smorty,

So many content? You mean so many levels? While searching for the current download link for Debian 12, I really just couldn’t find the right one I think, so I just went for one which had amd64 and gnome in the title. It was for a CDROM, but I flashed that onto some USB.

Smorty,

I only have the options “GNOME” and “GNOME Classic”.

Smorty,

Yeah. Actually wanted to put an -nvidia hate- comment at the bottom, buzt thought it’d be too much. I do actually have some money lying around, so if I switch, it’ll be an amd. I currently have the classic: GTX 1060 in my machine, how did you feel your performance change, if at all?

Smorty,

Thank you very much for your answer. I was not aware of the dist-upgrade being required now, so I did that, but unfortunately it did not change anything after a reboot. I reinstalled nvidia-detect to see if that caused any issues, but that did not seem to be the case. Your last step I actually already did some time ago, and I tried to do the same no. Unfortunately that also did not seem to have fixed the problem. The nvidia graphics settings software is still installed, but it only shows some very limited control options compared to how it used to be. This is what that program looks like now:

https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/pictrs/image/41ed5baf-153a-4d38-b407-7649c7781716.png

So this really seems to be more of an nvidia issue, rather than a gnome one.

Smorty,

I don’t have any sources files in my /etc directory. My Debian install in general is really weird, since the default apt sources came only with some CD ROM source, which did not work with the Internet. So I had to manually add all sources myself (probably caused some of my troubles…) These are my sources right now

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free non-free-firmware deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-updates main contrib non-free non-free-firmware deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-backports main contrib non-free non-free-firmware deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main contrib non-free non-free-firmware

I’m assuming these are correct, as they all got that bookworm in them.

I will try the other options though, thanks!

Smorty, (edited )

Tried both already. The issue already shows up on the login screen, so I don’t think it’s gnome

Desktop icons not loading (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I’ve had this issue for a while now, since I thought I could fix it myself. Almost all my programs have lost their icon image, which is not fixable by applying a different icon theme unfortunately. Just installed the Reversal icon pack to test that. My settings are attached here, sorry for the german:...

Smorty, (edited )

Look at the comment I made above. I already tried that. EDIT: I almost didn’t see the star, sorry

Smorty,

Naw, I still have a good 100 GB left on my storage.

Smorty,

This is all what shows up. Heres my complete terminal output:

marty@MartyPC:~$ sudo update-icon-caches
[sudo] Passwort für marty:
Usage: /usr/sbin/update-icon-caches directory [ ... ]
marty@MartyPC:~$

Smorty,

Maybe this package isn’t installed either, since I get some sort of error message: Usage: /usr/sbin/update-icon-caches directory [ … ] I tried assigning some directory to it like this: sudo update-icon-caches /usr/share/icons But this didn’t change anything either.

Smorty,

Where is this image from? Love the atmosphere

Gamepad not communicating with Game

I am trying to get Outer Wilds running on my Debian machine, and the “running” itself was a breeze. It runs perfectly on Lutris. But somehow my controller doesn’t communicate with the game. I did check if it is being picked up at all, and using the jstest-gtk tool, I could see that every input is being registered. Same...

Smorty,

I am really just using some very cheap off brand controller I found at some store. It does work on my RetroPie, but not my Debian pc. I have now switched over to my steam controller (since it works without any problems) and playing with it feels fine too.

So I guess I the problem has been solved for me, but the mystery of what causes this issue remains.

Smorty,

I just tested it and unfortunately it did not fix the problem. Thing is, not Lutris nor Steam is picking up the gamepad. So I don’t see Steam eating the input, since it also doesn’t seem to recognize it.

loads of uninstallable dependencies on debian

I installed Debain 12 about a month ago, and kept having difficulties with the package manager. It seems to lack any sort of sources in its default configuration, so that I had to manually add some which I saw online to the sources file. By default, the sources file only refered to some cd-rom thing, even though I installed the...

Smorty,

It kinda has multiple times. I tried installing a Wayland version of gnome and that ended up nuking the Desktop multiple times. Then to fix it, I just ran this in a TTY: sudo apt remove gnome sudo apt install gnome And that fixed the desktop (even my wallpaper and shortcuts were back, wow).

And yes, I will update my sources to suit my OS.

Smorty,

In case it is needed, here is my current sources.list content:

odd scaling issue with lmms (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

All my applications scale perfectly fine (in that they just don’t change their scale factor when moving from monitor to monitor). But somehow lmms scales very weirdly. The main monitor shows the program way too large (like in the photo, that is fullscreen) and my side monitor shows the application in slightly too small scale...

I love potatoes

Just wanted to show my love for potatoes. They have such a wide range of possible flavours, they make me actually full, they can be healthy or unhealthy, they’re so great. Mashed potatoes are super easy to make and taste amazing, potato soup literally one of my top 3, sliced potatoes in a pan with some oil and stuff super...
