TechNerdWizard42, to asklemmy in What is this wire for?

It’s part of an IR Blaster setup. That looks like the “blaster”, aka the IR LED Transmitter. Most receivers have multiple ones to catch reflections and such

TechNerdWizard42, (edited ) to asklemmy in How would you feel/react if your home address was announced & published very publicly the same way celebrities experience?

No celebrity owns the house the live in or stay in. No truly rich person does.

An LLC or more likely a trust owns the house, land, everything they have. And those are owned by other LLCs and Trusts so you can’t follow the chain. If someone is doxxed, they go somewhere else. Many places are rented out (think Airbnb) all the time. If you get caught, your agent will “leak” that’s just where you were vacationing and the next paparazzi photos will be in different locations on purpose.

Then you do what many do, and buy their real homes in countries that take privacy seriously. When you want an escape, you fly to your real house. No such thing as papparazi, security issues, or anything.

Practice your telekinesis and telepathy

TechNerdWizard42, to lemmyshitpost in You know tipping has gotten out of control when your son says we have to tip Santa with money.

In America’s hat, common as well. We always set out a chilled glass and a Molson with some Christmas cookies for Santa.

I was genuinely confused when the Americans I later met said milk and cookies… Why milk? There’s no cows or goats in the North pole, Santa is home brewing.

TechNerdWizard42, to asklemmy in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?

Another early 2000’s smartphone user. Whoop whoop. It seems to blow people’s mind that you could have a colour touchscreen smartphone years before the stupid iPhone was even invented.

TechNerdWizard42, to privacy in Next smartphone I buy, which one do you recommend?

Do be careful, your choices are very limited. All the carriers in the US, except TMobile today, have a whitelist of devices. Even if you make your own phone or buy an awesome phone from out of market, it won’t work.

Technically, there is no reason it won’t work. But the carriers block it from registering on the network unless roaming. Our non-American devices have been kicked off every network now except TMobile.

So your choice is really just the small list of devices they choose to support and 75% are the same phone. Samsung whatever with some various sized screen and various sized storage. Or Apple iWhatever.

They make your life hell with a non-standard carrier phone. And yes I’ve been buying out of region phones for 20 years now, even back with Windows Mobile and Palm devices with 2G text based web. Every year it gets harder and harder.

TechNerdWizard42, to cooking in [QUESTION] Ceramic coated nonstick pans

Ceramics also can’t get super hot and the coating will break down with repeated high heat. Your Teflon pans will outgas and poison you and high temperatures, so it’s not only bad for the pan but just a bad idea overall to use them high heat. If that’s your typical cooking scenario, then switch to ceramic.

If you’re doing lots of high heat and transfer between oven and range, you can’t really beat solid metal or a cast iron.

Almost all the ceramic coated dishes you buy in the lower price range are the same. Blasting ceramic powder via plasma onto metal. As long as the application was done properly, which it probably is unless you’re buying factory rejects, it’ll last the same and act the same. They also get very heavy which may be a concern as you try to strain gallons of pasta water out.

I like them, but they aren’t for everyone.

TechNerdWizard42, to movies in Box Office: ‘The Marvels’ Gets Grounded With MCU’s Second-Lowest Opening Day Ever

It was a legitimately awful movie. If you asked chatgpt to make you a superhero movie for teen girls and the plot didn’t matter, this is what it would be. I’m hoping that’s the audience they’re trying to pull into the giant universe, because everyone else is going to be left underwhelmed.
