I’d love to see the Foundation and the Robot series of Asimov.

As single movie, Asimov’s End of Eternity would be great.

Yeah, everybody with a phone can be followed… unless the leave the phone at home, forgeg toncharge it, …

For every high-tech problem there is a low-tech solution.

That didn’t work… Next!

And when it’s a real big mess: In 100 years, nobody will know or care.

The one at work was a ‘2nd chance’ Kensington Orbit which was missing it’s top support, making it a tad unstable. I asked if that was by design, company gave a full refund and let me keep it. It’s safe at work, coleagues have no clue how to use it and it wobbles when in use. (When you don’t put a few post-it’s where the top support should have been)

I have 2 orbits with scroll ring at home, and a few marble mouses as spare. (But that scroll ring is adictive)

Nah, nvi, once you go native vi… (most run straight back to vim ;) )

I’m feeling old, using vi since '89.

Did the same until I got an employer without flex spots, it’s now permanently at my desk there.

That takes me back. Years ago I used a xxodd laptop (running debian, biggest pro, it came without Windows license), Model M keyboard (spacebar cap wore out after 10y heavy use, have 10 keyboards spare) and logitech marble mouse. (Alas, as all good Logitech products, discontinued years ago)

Now running Debian on a i9 Gen 13 laptop with 24 cores, 64G mem, DasKeyboard 4 Ultimate, Kensington Orbit with scroll wheel and 2 24" QHD screens.

And guess what, I’m reading lemmy on my Samsung Tab S2 8", refurbished.

We have 2. The el-cheapo (Lidl) is called Robby and is let loose in the bedroom and bathroom. The rumba is called Robert and is for the livingroom.

I switched from Firefox to Vivaldi last year and never regretted it. I like the ad blocking that it has as standard and the uBlock origin plugin makes it 99% perfect. It’s pretty light weight and the tab stacks work good. No clue if those stacks are chromium or vivaldi, but they work.

Why are we as humans obsessed with mass-extinction of our species?

I was having a conversation with my friend about this. We were discussing AI and she believes AI will destroy all of humanity just like so many others. I personally don’t believe that. I’m aware of all the theories and the multitude of ways that it could happen and I understand that with AI, in theory we wouldn’t...

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

No clue why we need AI for that, we can arrange our mass extinction perfectly by ourselves by just continuing on this road. 🤭

At this moment, I think the main issue is that we as a species don’t think enough of our mass extinction. For some strange reason, most people (at least in ‘the west’) think they’ll survive whatever happens, nuclear war, climate change,…

However, no matter the method of our extinction, I guess most people thinking about it think it would be bad. From nature’s point of view we’re just “a species” and when evolution in this direction proves to be a bad route, no big loss.

When you pay enough and have the right government, a society.

  • free tuition
  • free or at least affordable healthcare
  • social security
  • physical security
  • transportation

Without it, our country (the Netherlands) would be a lot smaller, as most of it would be below sea level. It still is, but the dykes, which are build and maintained via taxes, keep the sea at bay. No roads to travel on, no military to defend the country, no healthcare that is affordable for all and no food on the table for the unemployed.

When your taxes are spent well, it’s a great return on investment. (My income for one ;) ) However, when the government is mostly corporate owned, the return is a lot less.

I’m selfhosted for my email, but then again, I don’t email on my phone. The phone is to small for my aging eyes. I prefer a physical keyboard when I type, so I email behind a computer.

BTW I can read the email via K-9 mail on the phone, in emergencies. (But then again, it’s email, no guaranteed delivery)

I wish it would be as easy to install as typing apt-get install i2pd and just answer a few questions. (Or even better, have it as advised package off qbittorrent)

I’ll look into the script to see what it’s doing before trying an install, but most users either blindly run the command or won’t bother.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Lemmy seems to be a good place to start. ;)

I usually use ddg to search for sites, lurk there for a while to see what the questions and answers are and after a while either ask a question myself, when I like the site and haven’t seen the questlon with appropiate answer in search results. That is, when I’m not member of a RL club and they have meetings/a site I can find the answer.

  1. Don’t have the junk in the house
  2. Don’t have so much I can eat myself sick when 1 failed
  3. Don’t have it in sight or even within reach when 2 failed

When everything else fails, eat myself sick and get sick over the remainder. However, 1 is the main goal here.

Anglo-saxon economics. Very short term goals, no viable survival strategy of the country.

I’d say their main goal is to keep managers busy with something to prevent them from hindering work that needs to be done to keep the place running. ;)

Reddit for the subs for the games I play (not on Lemmy). Youtube for vids for the same game and a local newspaper site. I only use a browser when behind a computer. (As I’m in IT, that’s not to often in my spare time)

Lemmy is read in liftoff when using a tablet, when I’m not gaming.

Facebook is totalky ignored now. I’d like to delete the accou t, but for me to be able to delete it I 1st need tomeither give them permission to use my data or bug a subscription due to EU law. (which I don’t want to do, so I let the account just die)

I have Intel for my laptops and arm in the RPis. No AMD in use here. (My ancient AMD based servers refuse to boot)

I should have written Intel/AMD, ‘the big, power hungry, stuff’ or non-arm. ;) I don’t want to waste memory for a desktop environment on the RPis when a simple, '90s window manager does the trick as well for the vnc server.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

I get the feeling you’re not happy with Gnome, but not unhappy enough to ditch it.

Open Source window managers and desktop environments enough to choose from, preferred ones here are ctwm for low resources environments (RPi) and xfce4 for intel based laptops. There are loads of other options, I’m sure, but no experience with those. (KDE and Gnome are the reason my wife and I use xfce4)
