Keep using Linux, for the 30th year. Started in '94 with Slackware 1.2, RedHat 1/1.1 in '95 and switched to Debian at the end of '95 (0.93 R5 or R6). I was running OS/2 for my BBS in that time, with a link to my Linux system with internet since august '95. I had a terminal with null-modem cable next to my bed for IRC, 10 Mbit connection at my room. (campus of UTwente in the Netherlands)
Having the same sence of humor proved crucial for me, next to loving pets. I dated someone once and when she asked why I asked her I told her I liked older women. She was 3 days older. (And not amused)
I felt totally comfortable with a girl I met at a forum meeting we started seeing each other more. She had pets and the same sence of humor. She’s my wife for 14y now, we have loads of pets. On my birthday I get gifted a younger wife, on her birthday she’s rescued from an old man. She’s 6 months younger.
I was raised catholic. When the class at school had their confirmation, I refused as religion felt more like a fairytale then something to really believe in. When I saw they got gifts, I was disappointed and wanted to confirm when my sister was doing her’s (to get gifts as well, wrong reason).
For that confimation I had to do bible study, during which I learned what’s in the bible. As I invested all that time, I went trough with it for the gifts, but I learned my 1st impression was right. To me it’s nothing more then a fairytale. That confirmation was my last volentary visit to a church to attend service. (Played tourist a few times, the buildings are still nice)
Till today, I still prefer to know, not to believe anything that is being told.
Nowadays I find a lot of games feel like too much work and/or anxiety when I just want to relax for like, 30 minutes to an hour after a long day. On the other hand, the games specifically designed to help you unwind just feel boring imo....
I have several games for a lazy evening on the sofa, so it depends on the mood.
I hoard virtual cars, tanks and ships, so I pick CSR2 when I want to do an event there (daily boring grinding tasks are automated). When I want to shoot I either junp in World of Tanks Blitz or World of Warships Blitz.
When in a mood where I want to just tap around, I dust off Hay Day.
Gershwin Impact has been on the tablet, but after a few attempts to play it, it’s removed again. Looks nice, but not my style, yet.
You ever see a dog that’s got its leash tangled the long way round a table leg, and it just cannot grasp what the problem is or how to fix it? It can see all the components laid out in front of it, but it’s never going to make the connection....
Is it shallow, or petty, to decide based on name alone? Yeah, pretty much, but there’s probably something, a product or service or site, that the name has made you gloss right over it or jump to it ASAP....
I liked them as well, those self checkouts. Use the app from the store, scan what you need, have a total at hand, checkout and leave. That was how it went at the start.
Now it’s:
start app
battle with the wifi, as the store requires you yo use their wifi to be able to scan, let alone check out
have a grocery check at checkout (and need to pack it again, as no, they just take out, not repack)
when buying alcohol, have an age check
when buying a crate of beer, wait for the help to get a sticker
checkout
get a receipt even though you’re happy to go paperless and set so in the app
get stopped before leaving, as the sticker needs to be put on the crate
leave the self checkout area
get checked if the crate of beer you have has the sticker (even with 1 item in the cart, the crate and the bloody sticker clearly visible)
leave
When you’re just going for the crate of beer, you’re at least 5x as long busy by jumping trough all hoops at self scan and get treated as shoplifter to boot as well. I’m done with self scan. (especially with the shop closest to home, they lost a customer)
Also, loyalty cards cost money to make, so they discurrage the use of those as well. You can use handscanners from the store itself, but then you’ll have to scan the virtual card in the app to be able to start shopping, have a cumbersome scanner and no total for your groceries displayed. WHen you still need the app, why not scan with it.
The sticker seems to be for personel after checkout to see that the crate of beer has been bought and paid for (with the receipt, although legal, not being good enough.
Even though there is a huge distrust, still those self scan isn’t been dismantled and replaced by regular checkouts, nah, that would be to logical and you’d have to admit you made a mistake.
Yeah, that’s what was the situation here as well, until the grocery prizes exploded and customers started to scan a few items and taking the rest without paying. (so yeah, shoplifting made very easy) Especially this store seems to be a target, as it’s way out of the regular routes. It looks like they’re starting to notice the drawback of the idea.
I’ve been playing World of tanks blitz. I had fun, then discovered there is a world of warships blitz as well, which has a Dutch line of ships. It was the 1st game I heard of with Dutch content, so I’m now kinda hooked on it, chasing after all Dutch ships. It wasn’t exactly the name of the game, but more the hint of the content.
BTW I’m Dutch, when you haven’t guessed it already. ;)
For me it was weight that was a problem for a long time. I wore the 1st watch I bought, an '85 Commodore with dial and display for ages. When I wanted something new again, I went into the store and told them that I wanted something just as light. I went out with a Pulsar titanium model that was 2 gram heavier, but it was close enough.
In '12 I discovered it wasn’t weight, but the electronics that was the main cause of issues. Now I wear mechanical watches, with a Seiko 5 as daily and several automatics and manual winders as extra for when I feel like wearing something else.
Some have metal bands, some leather. I prefer metal in summer, leather in winter.
I have notifications active, but notification sound default to none. For apps I want a sound reminder (calendar and pm in chat apps), I set another sound.
I have a small sim-only, 200 min/sms and 3000MB data a month. 2000 from the plan, 1000 because my wife has the same plan with the same provider. Now I’l limited to home I use about 20-30MB, my wife about the same. The plan is €7.50 a month. It’s the cheapest option with data here in the Netherlands.
I have the lowest possible plan, 3000 MB. Of this I on average use 150-200 when I need to or can be at the office. Now, a medical issue prevents me from commuting, so data usage is abour 20-30 MB. I don’t use to much data, as at home and at work I can use wifi. When visiting I don’t use data, as I’m visiting.
In Dutch we have a saying “A donkey never walks into the same stone twice”. I conclude that donkeys are a lot smarter then most humans, sigh and hope nature will sort this one out.
Sub? Where’s the sub? Battle stations!!! Arm the torpedoes and depth charges!!! :D
We haver loads of communities for messing about, memes and just general banter. I think this community as well as !nostupidquestions and loads of others are for more serious questions.
Ok, Evernote committed hara-kiri, so time to move on. (no way I’ll pay for ransomware) Any tips for good alternatives for Linux/Android platform? My wife used Nimbus note a while back, recovered her account there, ColorNote pops up when looking for alternatives as well....
And the only alternative is premium, € 12 a month or when you pay per year € 100 a year.
And no way to get your data out of there unless you have Windows and are happy to select 100 notes per export (or at least that’s what I found, no Linux clients anymore). That’s what I call ransomware.
Thanks, sounds like an option as well. (The most promising at the moment)
Quick check shows no web interface. (or we can’t find it) Linux app goes via snap (yuck) or appimage (never heard off). Also the clipper (which we don’t need, we just want to enter text) requires the app installed on the computer. It’s still the closest thing I’ve seen so far though.
Come tell Tux🐧your Linux plans for next year to cheer him up (lemmy.world)
What are some green flags in a partner in your opinion?
I’ll start: if they have hobbies it’s a green flag for sure, doubly so if their hobbies are outlets for creativity.
Former religious lemmings, what made you quit religion or stop being a believer?
Mostly trying to relate.
What game do you play to just chill?

I am a vscodium user who has begun to get increasingly frustrated over lack of commands to do some simple things....
BVG out here recommending the best 2FA Apps! (lemmy.one)
Nevertheless I chose my Yubikey instead.
Which things have you avoided or embraced on the name alone?

What's the most comfortable watch you would recommend?
Hey Lemmy! 👋...
Do you disable notifications for all your apps?
let them all in or only allow for some specific apps (if so which ones)?
whats your november wifi usage??
Around 30% of all internet traffic is pornography. And you all know its no-nut november....
How do you deal with incompetence?
Especially paired with ignorance.
Why is this sub so against jokes and more lighthearted posts?
I don’t get it, every post here that isn’t about Linux or some serious topic seems to get downvoted to hell....
Best/usable free Evernote alternative
