I might move again. (Or not) (lemy.lol)

I moved from Lemmy.ml because I liked the name of Lemmy.world and it ran a newer Lemmy version which meant I could make communities. I moved from Lemmy.world because they defederated from piracy communities they didn’t even host (but for some reason still kept the small piracy community they DID host) From thelemmy.club...

Over-moderation will kill Lemmy instances. One of the reasons Reddit became as big as it did is due to very light-touch moderation verging on “absolute freedom of speech”. It was refreshing and ‘alternative’ compared to the increasing sanitisation of the Internet.

That’s the sub not the website, over moderation is a feature of some subs, just like lemmy instances. Just like reddit, if you don’t like it create your own, unlike reddit you can set an overall tone to your instance.

i use google to search reddit and youtube. reddit’s search still sucks and youtube brings up the same results as google generally and it’s in my address bar aleady.

I’d like to think that, but I just went to twitch to see what was up and i’ve got one “18+ 🥵🥵” in my recommends despite the only things i’ve really watched on twitch being like 24 hours of marvel snap to collect rewards in that game (i left it in a tab running in the background because why the fuck would i watch other people play something I can just play? but i wanted the in game rewards), some classic TNA (which despite the name is just wrestling) and the first iteration of watch forever (the ai generated Seinfeld).

So they’re definitely advertising it outside people explicitly looking for it.

That said i have no problem with it, if this is how people are making their bag in our capitalist hellscape, get that bag…

an Idle Hands marathon

I actually kind of like the movie, but why would a channel play it on repeat?

It’s sad to see that everyday users have gotten habituated to these constant workflow braking updates.

I’ve never understood this problem, people talk like it has a mind of it’s own and i just don’t get it.

I’m running windows 11 pro and have never had updates interrupt my shit.

Updates show up in my system tray, then it updates overnight when i sleep.

for what it’s worth, it’s a small active community. Those that stay participate, like a pre-Eternal September internet. I’ve seen memes here before they made it to reddit, that’s a shift in “power” that can’t be understated in the landscape of the internets.

“Normal guy in 2000”

as someone who was into computers and in high school in 2000, that that was not normal.

even if yo mean normal computer literate person, not even then… Most people did not run their own servers, was it more common, yeah, but it wasn’t a given.

Things were only free if you were into piracy, everything cost money though without as much marketing, but then it wasn’t a huge market…

Also ads were everywhere and worse…

like fungi recycle dead things into an absurd amount of nutrients, without them trees especially would barely break down and just stick around until very very eventually they turn into coal.

this is just such a cool thing to think about, there was a time when there were just dead trees everywhere in forests, like just laying there being logs or whatever, just piles and piles of dead trees and that’s where coal comes from.

The people mining and dying and polluting the planet just digging out piles of dead trees.

Just like what? I get it, but what?

Just 6Mbps

I’m sorry…

I feel as though you’re also assuming I’m 100% advocating for what I’m describing

i think you’re missing it. Government for as glacial and corrupt and corruptible as it is, is the only buffer from the excess of a free market.

businesses without a guardrail HAVE proven they will sacrifice everything, literally everything in the name of profit.

Oil companies have know for about a century that they are destroying the planet and they are *still * doing it. They fight every regulation that stops them tooth and nail. They buy and shelve technologies that would cut into their profit. Imagine a world where there was no one trying to stop them at all?

That is the proper diagnosis of our system. We have allowed unaccountable immoral groups to control the means of production and they are literally using it to with kill us all.

Okay, let’s do it explain how in a “pure” capitalist society a public body, without the ability to at least nominally use a legal system to guard against collusion and monopoly using the threat of breaking up or shutting down corporations, provide any protection?

Giving them the power to do that makes them just a government by another name.

TheKingBee,
@TheKingBee@lemmy.world avatar

I guess i’m getting that from when you first said,

but in a truly free market capitalist system

I just assumed you were defending a “truly free market” capitalism.

to address what you just posted,

is it appropriate to blame capitalism when a public corporation in collusion with the government is at fault for an issue? If not, why?

yes, capitalism creates the conditions for that collusion. It allows entities with the only goal of profit at any cost.

removing the government doesn’t reduce that corruption it just allows it to go unchecked without even an illusion of protection to the public.

I’m not sure what’s going on in that thread.

Also, I dislike the framing of stochastic parrots as an insult AND its application to people.

Like wtf does that mean? It’s a joke pointing out that it sounds like a monty python insult, not a suggestion to adopt it as real language.

Also being disapointed that Weinersmith isn’t a technopessemist is just an odd take.

I’m not trying to defend windows, it has a myriad of issues, but I’ve never understood the meme of it updating at inconvenient times. I run windows 11 pro, I set it to only update when i tell it to and it does… Like it’s never been a problem, wasn’t a problem in windows 10 or 7 pro either.

I don’t get it, am i windows whisperer and not know it?

Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Hi, I am a guy in early thirties with a wife and two kids and whenever I go on youtube it always suggests conservative things like guys dunking on women, ben shapiro reacting to some bullshit, joe rogan, all the works. I almost never allow it to go to that type of video and when I do it is either by accident or by curiosity. My...

You need to train your algorithm.

When you hover over those videos there will be three dots in the lower right hand corner use either not interested or don’t recommend this channel to clear the right wing trash from your feed.

On videos you do like you need to do some engagement, watch complete videos, thumbs up (or down it doesn’t matter) and comment.

Do that for a few days and your feed should clear up.

TheKingBee,
@TheKingBee@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a daily youtube user and this has been not been the case for me.

My feed, outside the occasional straggler, is pretty free of nonsense.
