Though the x11 is a real shame (looking forward to Wayland support soonish), I’ve found cinnamon to be the smoothest transition from windows. Since I still have to use windows for work, it’s nice to have something that doesn’t really disrupt my workflow when switching back to my personal laptop. And I find cinnamon to be pretty slick and stylish.
I tried KDE for the same reason, but it just feels a little too bulky.

Oooh, need to find me a NAS buddy. I’ve been getting into using syncthing lately, I’ve learned that it can encrypt your files before syncing them so that the remote storage never actually knows what’s in them. Still probably need to trust the other end, though.
Maybe you just need to find the right veggies or the right seasoning. I wouldn’t say I love veggies more or less than a burger, but they add much needed variety.
It’s just the easiest distro to get into coming from windows/mac. It’s more lenient about the third party/closed source software that people might be familiar with, lots of GUI tools including the Software Center that makes it easy to install things, and plenty of flavors to suit whatever feels most natural to you. It’s got a nice GUI installer and live version that is sure to make people feel more comfortable about installing an OS if they’ve never done it before, and it’s not at all fussy about the hardware it runs on. It’s also rock solid as far as I’ve experienced. And, of course, it has the benefit of accessing the huge amount of software that supports debian. Also, owing to its popularity, the community is very active and welcoming to newbies.
When I was first getting into Linux, I was definitely more experimental and tried out Fedora just to get as far from Windows as I could. Now I’m not so adventurous and just want something that provides as similar a workflow as possible to the workflow I have to use at work with windows. So it goes that, when setting up a new laptop where I want an OS that just works, I reach for Linux Mint.
I mean, it may depend on the context, but I think it’s pretty reasonable to feel uncomfortable if it’s apparent that someone is thinking about having sex with you while you’re just trying to have a conversation.
From the other side, for a lot of women don’t just hear that people do that (though there are many firsthand accounts), they experience it. Even if you don’t mean anything by it, they’ve likely been the victim of enough purposefully suggestive comments that they’re sensitive to it. It’s not really your fault, but it’s not theirs, either.
Out of curiosity, do you have some examples of misconstrued phrases?
I don’t think the majority of Americans have strong feelings about it one way or the other (despite what the internet may say). Honestly it’s just so low on the list of priorities that it doesn’t seem like we’ll ever be in a stable enough place to care about tackling it. Hell we’re still struggling to kill daylight savings time and that would require a fraction of the changes required to adopt metric.
We’re trying, but the Sunshine Protection Act is stuck in congress. They’re tying themselves in knots trying to figure out which time we should settle on. Like, I don’t give a duck, just pick one and move on! Ask the farmers and other outdoor workers what they prefer, the rest of us can deal. They’re concerned about traffic and whatever when we’ve seen that time changes cause lost productivity every single year. So infuriating, can’t help but waste time on the simplest things.
I also found that line hilarious. Like yeah plays may run longer, maybe into the 4 hour range, but they have intermissions with well-known signals when it’s time for people to return to their seats.
And, of course, old movies had intermissions, too. Has he never heard the “Let’s all go to the lobby!” jingle?
It’s especially great that they aren’t migratory birds, so you get to see these fattened little red fluffballs all winter. They really look striking against the snow.
Same with robins, they’re an incredibly common bird, but they are also so handsome.
