Theharpyeagle,

Old laptops also make for great servers and hobby computers. If you don’t need the form factor of a pi or mini pc, throw Debian or whatever on an old laptop and play away! I’ve got jellyfin, my DNS, reverse proxy and an octoprint server running on mine. It’s the little heart of our network.

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

Theharpyeagle,

Back when I started using Linux, I really wanted something that was super different from windows (I used Gnome 3 for like 3 years). I decided one day to try out Fedora cause, hey, I can live on the bleeding edge.

Second day I had it installed, I was having issues with the audio. Decided to try reinstalling pulse. Apt autoremoved it and somehow completely nuked the entire GUI. Stuck in terminal mode, I found that I had no ethernet to connect to, nor could I figure out how to connect to a wifi network with a password or download packages to a USB. After a couple hours, I gave up, wiped the drive, and went back to Mint.

Nowadays I’m happier in my little comfort zone.

People probably felt the same way Unity’s relatively fair licensing terms, or D&D’s license. They’ve rolled back now, but it’s common for companies to push this sort of thing, roll back, and then slowly introduce the same thing.

The point is not to avoid Steam, but to keep an eye out for scummy moves because no entity operating for profit is immune to temptation. Be ready to abandon ship should the time come or you’ll be the one left holding the bag.

Theharpyeagle,

Movement of money = economy

Gift cards are just fancy plastic money

Ergo, OP is doing God’s the invisible hand’s work.

Theharpyeagle,

You could go with the athletic shorts under the skirt, still a lot of airflow but no risk of flashing.

Theharpyeagle,

In what way?

Theharpyeagle,

The best thing is that they’re made by people who grew up on the same stuff. Like OK KO is this wild blend of Looney Tunes and 90s/early 2000s Shonen and I love it.

Theharpyeagle,

Okay, I agree that this is a really dickish way to respond to a dev, and I can see Torvald’s message being as much an olive branch to app devs as it was a thorough humbling of the maintainer. Still wouldn’t call it professional, but… I get it.

Theharpyeagle, (edited )

You can be polite or just straightforward and still get your message across.

“We don’t blame bugs on user programs”, “This is not an error code that should be used here”, “Your coding standards may have relaxed over your tenure, be sure to maintain quality code.”, etc. I get the annoyance, but you can be firm without yelling, especially in a professional environment.

Edit: Seeing the full context of Mauro’s message (posted below), I can see why Linus took this tone. Mauro was being pretty condescending to a dev.

Theharpyeagle,

Jenny Nicholson is my weak spot. Defunctland and Down the Rabbit Hole are also great.

Theharpyeagle,

I… what? What does Ubuntu have to do with misogyny?

Theharpyeagle,

Meh, Musk has plenty of shitty qualities that deserve criticism, we don’t really need to pick on his appearance.

Theharpyeagle,

I know it’s just a meme, but god damn I hate this format. Some men cry while watching the titanic, some (many) women use *nix.

Humans start quickly dying at something around 32F and 180F.

They do? 32F is 0C, it very routinely gets below freezing in many inhabited parts of the world, including the US, and people get along just fine with some precautions. Likewise with 100F (not sure what 180F has to do with it). So yeah, 0F and 100F are around the extremes of what humans regularly experience. (though it does, of course, get hotter and colder in some places).

Theharpyeagle,

It’s just the easiest distro to get into coming from windows/mac. It’s more lenient about the third party/closed source software that people might be familiar with, lots of GUI tools including the Software Center that makes it easy to install things, and plenty of flavors to suit whatever feels most natural to you. It’s got a nice GUI installer and live version that is sure to make people feel more comfortable about installing an OS if they’ve never done it before, and it’s not at all fussy about the hardware it runs on. It’s also rock solid as far as I’ve experienced. And, of course, it has the benefit of accessing the huge amount of software that supports debian. Also, owing to its popularity, the community is very active and welcoming to newbies.

When I was first getting into Linux, I was definitely more experimental and tried out Fedora just to get as far from Windows as I could. Now I’m not so adventurous and just want something that provides as similar a workflow as possible to the workflow I have to use at work with windows. So it goes that, when setting up a new laptop where I want an OS that just works, I reach for Linux Mint.

Theharpyeagle,

It’s especially great that they aren’t migratory birds, so you get to see these fattened little red fluffballs all winter. They really look striking against the snow.

Same with robins, they’re an incredibly common bird, but they are also so handsome.

Theharpyeagle,

But like… so what? What does this add to the flat earth “theory”? Like, okay there were really, really big trees once. Now what?

I know I’m looking for logic where it doesn’t exist, but this really baffles me.

Theharpyeagle,

Honestly with how shit windows 11 feels, I’m thinking of even switching my gaming pc to be totally mint. Thank goodness for Nvidia support and proton.

Theharpyeagle,

Though the x11 is a real shame (looking forward to Wayland support soonish), I’ve found cinnamon to be the smoothest transition from windows. Since I still have to use windows for work, it’s nice to have something that doesn’t really disrupt my workflow when switching back to my personal laptop. And I find cinnamon to be pretty slick and stylish.

I tried KDE for the same reason, but it just feels a little too bulky.

Theharpyeagle,

Death Grips is car jamming music, you really gotta get into that mood for it.

Theharpyeagle,

I also found that line hilarious. Like yeah plays may run longer, maybe into the 4 hour range, but they have intermissions with well-known signals when it’s time for people to return to their seats.

And, of course, old movies had intermissions, too. Has he never heard the “Let’s all go to the lobby!” jingle?

Theharpyeagle,

Maybe you just need to find the right veggies or the right seasoning. I wouldn’t say I love veggies more or less than a burger, but they add much needed variety.

Theharpyeagle,

I mean, it may depend on the context, but I think it’s pretty reasonable to feel uncomfortable if it’s apparent that someone is thinking about having sex with you while you’re just trying to have a conversation.

Theharpyeagle,

From the other side, for a lot of women don’t just hear that people do that (though there are many firsthand accounts), they experience it. Even if you don’t mean anything by it, they’ve likely been the victim of enough purposefully suggestive comments that they’re sensitive to it. It’s not really your fault, but it’s not theirs, either.

Out of curiosity, do you have some examples of misconstrued phrases?
