I see what you did there ;)

Transcendant, (edited ) to asklemmy in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

I liked his writing but a third of the way through the 4th book I realized I didn’t give a shit about the characters anymore.

xD fair point. I guess we all have different tolerances for different stuff. I was dating women in their 40s when I was in my 20s so maybe the age gap stuff flew over my head when I read them. I just finished a really enjoyable book by Stephen Baxter called ‘World Engines’, the main character also appears in other books by him and I really, really struggled with it purely based on the character.

He’s called Malenfant, and would you believe it, he’s bad-tempered! ‘Malenfant grunted:’, ‘Malenfant snorted’, Malenfant scowled, oh very subtle Stephen. He is capable of imagining such diverse creatures, thought patterns and genuine ‘hard sci’ concepts, then went with ‘grumpy old man’ for the protag. There’s enough grumpy old men running the place already, I’d prefer my fiction to be a respite from that!

Looking forward to his next book about a protaganist paralysed by indecision called Soppy McSimpleton.

Aww. I loved all three, though perhaps that opinion is formed in some way because I was heavily into learning about Buddhism at the time.

Dan Simmons is an incredible author, I really should check more of his books out. The only other ones I read (before Hyperion actually) were the Ilium / Olympos ones which were very enjoyable.

Transcendant, to asklemmy in 1st time house buyer, potentially serious structural issues found... anyone have advice re negotiating price reduction / if I should pull out?

Yeah I took the explanation at face value, at first… but the more I think about it, in conjunction with not turning the water on it feels very much like they’re trying to pull a fast one.

The surveyor said he was actually surprised to find the roof in quite good condition… seems like at least one area where it’s either been properly maintained, or had very high-quality work performed.

I’ll definitely do some shopping around for structural engineers in the area for future surveys, might as well go in deep for the most expensive & important issues before moving forward with any future potential purchase. Great advice, thanks.

I guess I can do an update once I have the report in writing. Someone has made the point that the surveyor will ‘over-survey’ to cover their arse, but for sure I’m very much leaning into the possibility that this purchase isn’t viable. Thanks.

Transcendant, to asklemmy in Which organism would you most like to be able to conduct an extended translated interview with?

I wish I could exterminate the amount of times I typed ‘imo’ in my comment haha.

Transcendant, to memes in True next-gen graphics

Do you notice the difference between our systems? Yours is AMD cpu / AMD gpu, mine is intel cpu / nvidia gpu. We know AMD worked with BGS to some extent to make sure Starfield was well-optimised for their gear. I had a bit of a paranoid moment during my struggles to get it running that BGS had deliberately not optimised the game for non-AMD components and this info does not assuage my paranoia haha.

The nature of PCs I guess. I ran it on an i9 12900k, 2070s GPU, 48gb ram, m2 SSD, xbox gamepass and had no end of troubles. Even once I got it running, a majority of quests (inc main quests) were bugged to the point I had to use console commands to get past the bugs.

I’m by far not the only one. People were crashing on console! That’s insane. We now pay to be bugtesters.

Transcendant, to asklemmy in What series did you rewatch most often?

I just rewatched it for the first time, a few weeks back. It was absolutely glorious, proper lightning in a bottle comedy
