Which learning path makes the most amount of sense?

I just found out about The Odin Project, a self-paced online course to learn full stack web development. There are two paths: one is Ruby on Rails and the other is full JavaScript and nodejs. I am leaning more towards Ruby but I wanted to get some more opinions from folks in the field.

Thank you! Then it sounds like the more sensible path is JavaScript and nodejs. While I like the idea of personal challenge, I am trying to learn how to do this so I can get out of the skullduggery of my present career as a senior desktop support engineer. I see myself more going towards DevOps with it. From the reading I did about DevOps, it seems that I would need at least some familiarity with a programing language. I am thinking if I could get a handle on JavaScript and python, I would be in pretty good shape, yes?

I thought Ruby was still pretty relevant given that Mastodon is essentially coded in Ruby but I am coming to the same conclusion you are based on another person’s comment.

I am seriously curious here: Why has popularity of Ruby declined?

You’re welcome! I am going to work on it slowly but surely. It’s going to be up to me to elevate myself out of my own miserable circumstances. The key to life improvement, I have always maintained, is lifelong education. Yeah, I ain’t no spring chicken compared to the kids coming out with degrees but I can probably hang with them with some effort.

Hey! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed comment. Yes, I truly appreciate the advice. That much said, I am more interested in the free and open source side of computing. I am sick and tired of Microsoft and want to pivot away from them. I get enjoyment out of Linux and the command line; real satisfaction and fun. Nevertheless, I am going to check out the AWS stuff! 😺

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I was kind of learning towards Ruby myself simply because the language syntax looks to me to be saner and easier. I realize I am up against quite a challenge developing skills and knowledge in the area of full stack development so I obviously I don’t want things to be too challenging. However, the overwhelming advice I have been given is JavaScript is the way to go and Ruby is for niche stuff.

Interesting! Thank you for the perspective. I am seeing a trend of smaller businesses that are bringing services back on premises and self-hosting but I have no interest in working for a small business. I’ve been there, done that, and it was hell.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Yes, I’ve added Python, Terraform and Ansible to my personal learning plan. All of what you mentioned is sound advice.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Then I would go AWS all of the way and hopefully on Linux. And yes, the prevailing advice is JavaScript so I’ve been convinced. 😂

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Ah will do! And thank you for the warning!

Ha! I had no idea and made the correction. Thank you.

What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Other than your carrier give it for free or cheap, I don’t really see the reason why should you buy new phone. I’ve been using Redmi Note 9 for past 3 years and recently got my had on Poco F5. I don’t see the point of my ‘upgrade’. I sold it and come back to my Note 9. Gaming? Most of them are p2w or microtransaction...

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

The main reason to do it is when the manufacturer no longer releases security updates for the phone. Given the security history and the typical corporate attitude of caring little for the customer, I want to minimize the risk posed by not having a very out of date operating system.

It is almost a drop in replacement for Reddit. I had an easier time figuring out Lemmy than Mastodon and I’ve only been in the LemmyVerse now for 5 days.

Go figure that the OP would be a homophobe.

More to the point: where does anybody go for any reliable news? It seems like most news is now using hyperbole to make it entertainment. We have old man Rupert to thank for basically destroying a respected profession. That’s my 0.02 anyhow.

What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

I am wondering what kind of career moves I have available to me because I am over the bullshit of desktop support. I have been brushing up on my Linux skills, learning docker, and doing a whole bunch of networking-related things. At this point, I am 46 years old. Would it benefit me to go back to school to learn a skill to help...

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I tried Project Management and did not succeed at it. I am thinking of the DevOps course of action. I am still relatively young at 46. I’ll try and make the pivot.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

That’s really good that you were able to get out. I guess I could consider Tableau and SQL but I literally have zero passion or interest in it/for it. If I am going to make a change, this time it both has to make monetary sense and has to be something that I don’t hate every waking minute of.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I don’t know why I am languishing as senior desktop support then. It seems I lack the ability to even get my resume in front of anyone, let alone an interview.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

This is why now it is a good time for me to hunker down and simply learn and get through this tough time. Much as I hate dealing with the over-privileged assholes in state government, I’ll do what I have to whilst learning.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I don’t think I mind the support aspect. I just want to work at higher level than I am currently at where I have more challenge and reward.

It’s a good idea for the sake of your privacy to remove the metadata from the picture. While for a picture of a pet it is less important, it’s still a good idea to get in the habit of nixing the metadata. Don’t make it easier for you to be tracked and profiled.

Do you think there will be a future where your phone can automatically detect if you are trying to record police activity and disables your camera? What do you think the odds of this happening is?

I remember a while back Apple filed a patent that allows concerts to disable iPhones cameras if a certain signal is emitted from the stage. Apple never implemented this, but my pessemistic ass always try to think of worse case scenarios, like being used by government. Do you think this could occur in the future?...

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I guess that it is possible as our society becomes increasingly authoritarian. This is why I’m following Fair Phone. It’s a pure Linux phone that’s slated to become available this year or so I remember reading.
