apis,

Start sending invites to Signal. Setting up group chats can help too, as invitations to those create mild FOMO in the mind of the invitee, then once they have the app they can use it for things besides group chats.

apis,

Oh no. Hope next week’s a bit less meh.

apis,

Impressive! Was it grand?

apis,

What kinda thing were you all singing?

apis, (edited )

Wow. That sounds like a blast. Have heard some Barbershop & knew it is a US college tradition, but had no idea about the brigades.

As a curious aside, saw a thing on television just this evening about a Portuguese musical tradition which exists in their universities. The style & tunes are very different to Barbershop, and they make use of string instruments as well (though everybody has to sing) but they too have familiar repertoire and appear at various events on campus, as well as competing with other university troupes.

EDIT: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuna_(music)

apis,

Was the project something for work, or something personal?

apis,

Ooh, that is a fun thing to do.

apis,

Finally feel like am on the mend from a respiratory infection + injury to torso.

Which is great but now very behind on a lot of basic stuff in my life & feel it’ll be a while before my stamina is back up, so the trick will be tackling things without getting either worn out or despondent.

Some heavy mental stuff to process too, which reemerged prior to getting sick, but feeling somewhat hopeful, in that I suspect the period of dormancy was a total block for a couple of decades.

apis,

How long will this boat party last?

apis,

Oh whoopsie, I meant grand in the sense of “a really good time”.

Regional useage popping out of me again!

apis,

Cheers.

Majority of participants aren’t from Beehaw.

Bar one person, it seems all of the Beehaw people in the thread have similar concerns to OP.

apis, (edited )

Going to have a look. Not because I don’t believe you, but because it seems so at odds with the usual vibe here that am wondering whether someone unleashed some bot accounts to push this stuff.

If it is regular Beehaw members, that is for sure unnerving!

EDIT: am too dumb at internet to find it. Tried a search (for “ai” to keep it broad), browsing local and looking at subscriptions which aren’t totally incompatible places for such a topic, but coming up blank. Feel free to fling a link my way.

apis,

So sorry that happened to you.

Keeping him unblocked but muted, just in case he threatens to approach. Having forewarning (and evidence if it really escalates) is useful & my feelings are now such that he’s incapable of upsetting me.

Happy to report he’s gone quiet for now.

Painfully. Ribcage & sternum in bits following some overly exuberant dancing on the 30th. Hopefully just bruising & fractures and not soft tissue damage, but extra uncomfortable with a bad cough.

Still, should help me quit smoking as in too much pain to want to & likewise to shift pattern of seeing boyfriend to something far less frequent.

EDIT: realised I had to end things with boyfriend, so did that then got a barrage of super-manipulative texts, complete with vague suicide threats, so definitely dodged a bullet there. Very supportive message then came in from a mutual friend, so was able to clear up a few things.

apis,

It has never occurred to me to do either of those things, and apparently hasn’t to anyone I’m in contact with either.

Though I don’t use group chats or send files in Signal either, so there’s that.

apis,

SMS is my primary mode of contact with the rest if the world. I use Signal as well, but most people I know only use SMS.

apis, (edited )

Oof. Well, to my surprise.

Have so much going on (nothing bad, though some confounding stresses are trying to emerge) that have been procrastinating on replies to the usual weekly threads, and now a summary feels ever more distant.

As for Christmas itself, my tiny & fairly reclusive family go for a super low stress affair, but many years even that much feels far big a palaver. Planning to propose we just do it once every few years, and hone in on the aspects we genuinely like.

apis,

Well done. Can remember you mentioning this person before.

Why Not Store Encrypted Emails in Plaintext Locally?

Clients like Thunderbird are great because you have everything stored locally so you can easily search offline. They also support encrypting and decrypting emails in PGP. However, they seem to have the same limitation as protonmail where you can’t search through encrypted emails....

apis,

Just as it inconveniences you to have to decrypt to search, it would similarly slow down anyone malicious who gains access to your machine.

Am in favour of allowing users to decide which features are best for their needs, but this seems like it would be easy to forget to reinstitute local encryption after a search, so can also understand why developers prevent storing in plaintext.

apis,

Point is, one can decrypt each email individually. That slows an malicious attacker rummaging in your device from finding what they are after as much as it does you.

You wouldn’t be alone in wanting this feature, but for those who need rather than prefer to encrypt, the option to store locally in plaintext is a major risk. On balance it seems better for developers to pay heed to that than to our preferences.

For the rest of us, we can download the emails we wish to refer to with ease, or we can create aides memoire to make it easy to locate specific emails later.

apis,

“When you connect your phone to the car via bluetooth or usb your phone will trust the car and hand over the data.”

USB charging I can understand, but seems odd that phones do not block data transfers (besides that needed to manage charging) unless the user explicitly permits it.

I guess people use Bluetooth to connect to car speakers, but again, why are the phones being so permissive with what they send?

apis,

Bit behind the times here, but how are cars even accessing this information, unless the phone is built into the car system, and the user has an cellular/data/wi-fi account with the car manufacturer?

apis,

Or like someone just got smacked upside of their head.

apis,

Arrange a transfer from Russian branch to Armenian branch, withdraw money, close account.

Or just a plain withdrawal if you already have an account with them in Russia, and other banks are refusing your business.
