Welcome aboard!

I can’t believe I suffered with Windows for as long as I have.

Just the fact that articles like this need to exist (and are plentiful), as one very tame example, makes me wonder what kind of stockholm syndrome has grabbed anyone with a shred of technical understanding who is still using Windows. They actively work to prevent allowing you full control of the OS running on your own hardware, and to make it difficult (or require additional payment) to turn off privacy invading telemetry and advertisement. Ignoring all other complaints that could be made about Windows, how is this not a dealbreaker for way more people than it seems to be?

so it’d need careful handling of things like Lessa and F’lar’s relationship and such. And maybe, you know, keep Jaxom the hell away from Corana.

I read the original two trilogies in the 80s so I've forgotten some bits, but what were the things that would be problematic today? I don't think I remember any details relating to the above. Lessa is always one of the first people I think of when someone says "so and so was the first strong woman in scifi" and it's a character that came 30+ years later.

I only just read the Amber books a couple of years ago myself; I don't know how I'd missed them. Very much unique stories in my experience, really unlike anything else I've ever read. I did enjoy them, but I think I respected what he did as a storyteller more than I enjoyed them, if that makes any sense.

How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

Unless you have very specialized requirements (and quite possibly you do) the solution is usually to unhook yourself from thinking of needing specific programs and to instead focus on needing to perform specific tasks. (Then finding the Linux way to perform that task.)

Barring that, the codeweavers suggestion is a good one. I used it in my early days when I thought I couldn't live without particular pieces of Windows software and although that was several years ago, even then it was pretty good about being able to easily run arbitrary Windows software. IMO it's cheap enough to be worth the investment.

If you truly have bespoke requirements that just can't be satisfied by either of the above, staying on Windows may legitimately be your best option.

More generally - if you decide to take this step, expect to have to learn to use a computer substantially differently than you have in the past. It's not harder; in many ways it's easier. But if you are very experienced and comfortable with Windows, a lot of concepts are going to feel foreign to you. Tackle one task at a time and your experiences will build upon each other. Go into it expecting to have to learn, and you'll do fine. Bizarrely I find the least tech-savvy folks sometimes have the easiest time transitioning.

Ways to pirate music as convenient as Spotify?

The reason I gave up on MP3’s and subscribed to Spotify was because Spotify was easy. I’ve been listening “Iron Maiden - Empire of the Clouds” song every day and like a week ago, its removed. This was the last straw for me. Right now I’m trying to find “Stremio” of the music world. Can someone assist?...

I was about to move from Plex to Emby when the whole controversy erupted, and I waited excitedly for it to be ready.

Switched as soon as it was viable and have not regretted it one time.

Plus last.fm scrobbling

Every app seems to offer this. Why do I want this? I feel like I've been wondering this for like 20 years, but have been too afraid to ask lol.

I was an early adopter of Jellyfin and love it - but personally prefer Navidrome for my music server. Granted, I haven't looked at the music capabilities of Jellyfin in a long while, because I've been running Navidrome.

Symphonium android client is my recommendation for that (and I believe it also works for Jellyfin) but there are others.

My pipeline is essentially as you describe though Lidarr --> nzbget --> Navidrome

Ah sorry! I have only run it from within Docker on Linux. BUT, I'm glad you got it working!

I'm actually kind of annoyed by rage bait titles.

I like my penis though.

I don’t really think I’d like my dick to be any more sensitive than it is.

Exactly how I felt in my twenties. Hell, I used to wish I had an off switch for the whole damn thing.

Now in my 50s - a smidge more sensitivity would be OK. An "on" switch would be good too.

😁

IIRC they refined the Breeze icons over a LONG period of time to get them to the current state - I'm sure the same will be true here.

Are you posting these links in reply to me because you think I am suggesting the homeless need to work harder?

Ah, sorry for being so serious.

Really?

Yep that would be just the picture to post about an information freedom activist driven to death by the US justice system. that's why it says "Aaron Swartz day" in OP, because it's a pic of Rishi Sunak.

I have been slowly dipping my toes in Brother Ali the past few months, and recently listened to this for the first time. His voice is awesome but some of the words may be a little hard to catch. It's worth looking up the lyrics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO18F4aKGzQ

His voice is like caramel in my ears (in the most complimentary way), but it's his lyrics that get me in this and a few others.

Hey OP I just realized I should have linked the very tiny (so far no one but me posts there) kbin magazine I mod which is intended to more or less collect songs such as you describe. For each post I've included the lyrics.

I'm not sure how to link it that it will clickable on Lemmy, but it's:

Edit- I'd love not to be the only one posting!

Lifelong peanuts fan and I can't figure out who is Riker. Someone end my shame, please.

Edit: Is it Schroeder with black hair?

Spoilers

Jax making a suicidal head-on collision with a semi? (and really poorly produced at that) What from the first season would tell me to expect that?

be_excellent_to_each_other,

No spoilers, but the only thing preventing me from a rewatch is knowing how it's going to end.

Ah, the block list is going to go up a lot as I read this thread, I'm guessing.

If you aren't black, and you think you have a reason (or are trying to find one) where it's OK to say the N word in a non-academic context (and maybe even then), or you think you have a valid opinion on whether black folks should use it, or you think that black folks using it somehow justifies your use of it, you're either willfully ignorant of the depths to which that word has been used to dehumanize, and thus is indeed worthy of unique treatment, or you're a bigot, and likely both.

Edit: Not as many folks falling over themselves to find the corner case where it should be OK for them as I expected. gg fediverse, you aren't quite as shitty as r****t yet.

be_excellent_to_each_other,
@be_excellent_to_each_other@kbin.social avatar

There's not another word with as lengthy a history rooted in dehumanization of the other, so the unique status shouldn't be surprising.
