Is that only for certain editors? Because at work, the second I go offline I’m forced to close Idea.

bitwolf, to science_memes in He did though.

Maybe there is an Oxford comma? I understood what you meant

bitwolf, to memes in Seriously spends $80 to drive 20km..

I believe it comes from a saying that most wear is in the first ten minutes of driving.

Which I also believe assumes you don’t “wait for the car to warm up”

That saying. I still find some truth to it. While modern cars can adjust fuel mixture to different conditions. There still is an unavoidable few minutes where the engine runs in an open loop and wear is greater.

That said, in my vehicle when I listen for the engine to “close” it happens in less than 5 minutes.

So then they’re a publisher not a streaming service.

Tbf it’s not exactly made easy to completely remove chrome + Google from phones.

Even if you set Firefox as default, even with webview, some Google apps will call chrome anyway using the built in webview.

bitwolf, to linuxmemes in Linux mint = best beginner distro

Fedora runs at a twice annual release model and includes kernel and firmware updates within those releases whereas Ubuntu matches a kernel with a release.

Their packages, to me, feel much higher quality in terms of reliability and reaction time to reported bugs. They also test and guarantee updates for packages in their repos. I ran my college laptop through 15 system upgrades without any issues, nothing has been that reliable for me.

I enjoyed using Ubuntu for several years and hadn’t considered Fedora until they were the first to default to Wayland (f21) and never switched again.

You can do anything on any distro, so you end up just shopping for your fav package manager and default repo and staying there. I encourage you to play with all of them with a separated /home partition or so it’s easy to shop.

bitwolf, (edited ) to linux in Do I actually need to do anything to go from GeForce to Radeon?

Just uninstall all the Nvidia stuff and reboot. It’s been great for me so far.

Linux will auto detect the hardware and load the proper modules at boot. I believe initrd does this.

This worked great for Intel -> AMD CPU also. I just removed the Intel microcode packages after I rebooted to save the disk space.

bitwolf, to piracy in I'm currently downloading a show that is on a service to which I subscribe

You don’t need a crazy server either. I got a cheap Intel Celeron motherboard for mine. Peaks at 10w and just hangs out streaming music and videos to our phones.

Perfect for <10 people.

bitwolf, to linux in Who uses pure GNOME (no extensions)

Pretty.much pure gnome. The only thing I use is the auto night mode extension to make it go dark at sunset.

bitwolf, to linux in The future of Linux

Steam Deck gets more popular.

Steam console released with improved multi user experience and VR.

PlayStation sales drop in growth.

Steam OS released, PCs can use it with generic kernels.

Gaming PC manufacturers offer steam OS as a preinstalled.

PC manufacturers start to offer popular distros preinstalled.

System 76 puts their in house laptops into Best Buy shelves.

Adobe and Office no longer stuck on Windows and are distributed as wasm applications.

Bypass is maybe a poor choice of words. Both gamescope and Kwin are compositors so you can use one or the other.

An advantage of making gamescope is that they can add features like VRR or HDR without having to wayiting for KWin to implement it

bitwolf, to linux in Can this be replicated with opensource software?[p2p file transfer over thunderbolt, and extremely low latency Video and game streaming (no encoding)]

It looks as if you can do it, but it doesn’t automagically configure itself on Linux.

Intel seems pretty good about standardizing their TB features so we may see it in a USB4.x or USB5 standard.

That said, USB4 is TB4 capable so it may be able to be introduced into USB4 as is.

bitwolf, to mildlyinteresting in Pudding used to come in cans

I wonder how well PLA would work for food storage. I learned it’s made with beets and can break down very quickly.

bitwolf, (edited ) to linuxmemes in I don't...

While TeamViewer is definitely neglected I use it often on Wayland and it works well actually!

In the past year or so it doesn’t shut down correctly. But the core functionality works well.

I’ve been experimenting with Rustdesk as an alternative because I doubt they’ll update the Linux client anytime soon. The Windows version looks like an entirely different application at this point

In terms of feature parity. I believe the only thing left is global hotkeys, which hyprland proved it can be done.

bitwolf, (edited ) to piracy in YouTube on Firefox mobile is awesome

I also have this issue where the webview will refuse to change after a while.

I can try to leave a site typing in and address or try to switch tabs the UI will indicate the page changes and is loading but will still show the old site.

Eventually it goes black and is stuck until I force close and reload the page.

Haven’t yet figured out how /where to report as a bug
