blindsight,

Nobody casually says they’re "playing licensed [GAME]”, they just say they’re “paying [GAME]”, but they might say they’re playing a pirated copy. This meme is saying that, in Russia, people just say they’re playing a game, and the assumption is that it’s pirated, unless they specifically clarify that it’s a licensed copy. The expectation and use in conversation is reversed.

1.06 births per woman is going to lead to a population collapse, and I don’t think China is attractive enough to immigrants to make up for the gap.

The developed world would be having similar challenges, broadly, but have higher birth rates, generally, and much higher immigration.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but I think fears of a Chinese-led hegemony replacing the current US-centred regime is becoming increasingly unlikely.

Edit: I was curious, so I looked it up, and it’s even worse than I thought:

The net migration rate for China in 2021 was -0.252 per 1000 population

The idea is also that a compromised system will remains compromised after all storage drives are removed.

I’ve heard there are (more expensive) debris services that seed back, but I haven’t researched it. I’d already paid for Real Debrid when I read that and it hasn’t come up for renewal yet.

blindsight,

LitRPGs are like that, too.

Swing sword. Cast spell. Numbers go up. Defeat dragon. Complete quest. Numbers go up. Dungeon dive. Cool loot. Numbers go up.

I love them. I’ve read four this week.

Fuck phone cases and bad search. I just got the Sony Xperia 10 V. The whole Sony Line is just changing the number to 1, 5, or 10, and the Roman numeral from I to V (and growing).

Good luck finding anything. It literally took me hours (including advanced Google Fu) to find out that the style of case I want doesn’t exist for my model. (But the 10 IV has it.)

Is there a site that categorizes cases by exact model? I feel like it shouldn’t be this hard.

blindsight,

MAM is one of the better ones for ebooks, too, isn’t it? I should probably look into getting on it.

The “best” tracker for ebooks is, apparently, impossible to get an invite for.

Edit: lol, I should have clicked the link first. Self-described, but “You have found your way to arguably the best private tracker for ebooks…”

blindsight,

Bibliotik, apparently, but I don’t have a membership to check. It’s basically impossible to get an invite, from what I’ve heard.

blindsight,

Audiobookbay.nl is the best public audiobook tracker.

blindsight,

You’re all heathens. Oatmeal raisin is the best grocery-store cookie option, followed by white chocolate macadamia nut.

Even better is oatmeal cookies with diced apricots. So good.

Oatmeal cookies should be chewy. Crunchy chocolate chips wreck the texture.

blindsight,

Obligatory alt text:

“Do you feel like the answer depends on whether you’re currently in the hole, versus when you refer to the events later after you get out? Assuming you get out.”

XKCD should always include the alt text, imho. It’s often the better punchline (as in this case, imho.)

Brazil Regulator Claims "80% of Pirate TV Boxes" Were Blocked Last Week * TorrentFreak (torrentfreak.com)

Brazil’s telecoms regulator Anatel claims that during an operation last week, it successfully blocked around 80% of pirate ‘TV boxes’ in the country. Estimates from early 2023 suggest that seven million were active in Brazil. The operation, claimed to be the most significant ever carried out, arrives just weeks after...

blindsight,

They mentioned in the article that Google search tends from Brasil don’t seem to indicate any uptick in searches related to pirate TV boxes being seized or not working, either. So, this story is looking likely to be entirely fabricated propaganda.

blindsight,

lol, that’s amazing. I’m imagining you with a deep voice… “ARE YOU WITH THE EMPIRE OR REBEL SCUM?!”

blindsight,

Wow. That’s definitely a take.

I’m sure you’ll be pleased to hear that you aren’t subsidizing anything. Lower regional pricing in developing nations has absolutely no effect on the price in developing nations for games. There is no subsidizing because there aren’t any costs to subsidize.

blindsight,

That all goes out the window once you have kids though. You can’t plan diaper blowouts, motion sickness induced car cleanup, meltdowns, suddenly needing endless snacks, ripping off all their clothes and refusing to get dressed, hiding their shoes, hiding your shoes, hiding your keys, napping late, napping early, … I could go on.

But then you’re likely meeting up with other parents, and they get it, too. So it’s not a big deal again. When a parent says they’ll be there (with kiddos), they’ll likely be somewhere between on time and an hour late.

blindsight,

Yeah, of course. You text when you leave to say how late you’re running, lol.

But you also never make plans to meet at a spot where kiddos can’t play. Doesn’t really matter exactly when you show up at a park or to a playdate at someone’s house, right?
