burliman, to asklemmy in What is your best story when you were in a foreign country?

Was in Ireland a while back and I hit a guy with my rental car. Just a love tap. Nothing serious and no one was hurt. I was pulling out of a lot and it was really hard to see and I was looking for traffic and inching (centimetering?) out. And I look and there’s suddenly a bloke there, getting pushed a little. He smacks the hood of the car and yells something, then waves his hand at me and keeps walking.

In the States that would have been a lawsuit.

burliman, to asklemmy in Out of all the cars you've owned, which one holds a special place in your heart as the absolute favourite.

1990 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe.

burliman, to asklemmy in What is the point of small instances?

When cars first started being mass produced it wasn’t just Ford doing it. There were like 50 manufacturers, big and small.

burliman, to piracy in I just deleted my entire library and redownloaded it.

Don’t radarr and sonarr download better versions automatically? Seems these measures were drastic.

burliman, (edited ) to asklemmy in What companies have made your blacklist?

Sounds like you’re left with almost no modern conveniences or technology. I don’t mean this disparagingly, but I am curious how you live your life and ensure you are truly not using any of these companies or their subsidiaries, or even those shitlist companies if they are a white box supplier of someone else not on your list. Or even if a mom and pop shop down the street is using technologies, software, or appliances from one of these companies to run their local business…

Doesn’t seem possible in reality. Or at the very least seems like a full time job that would get really futile after a while.

Can I get a link to that Carl’s Jr commercial?

burliman, to asklemmy in What are some green flags in a partner in your opinion?

Interesting thought, but I wouldn’t say these are dependent on each other at all.

burliman, to asklemmy in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?

Teleportation, because the only upside to invisibility is subterfuge. Not that I am some saint who denies ever wanting that, it just seems like teleportation would be just as good at any use case invisibility has. It would also have lots of very life changing above board benefits too.

burliman, (edited ) to asklemmy in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

I thought I heard they were doing Project Hail Mary.

Edit: Yep, Ryan Gosling, directed by Lord & Miller.

burliman, to asklemmy in Have you read the Unabombers manifesto?

Watch out, someone may come in and make the same comparison about guns.

burliman, to asklemmy in What do we get in return for paying taxes?

People complaining about taxes have a right to do so. It’s perhaps the only reason we don’t have historically high taxes like we did around WWII. And if you’re European, your tax to GDP ratio is completely terrible and much higher than American rates. Then again Americans have to pay for their health insurance separately, so there’s that.

burliman, to asklemmy in What do we get in return for paying taxes?

If all we paid for were sewers, our taxes would be almost nothing per person. Plus I pay for sewers outside of taxes anyway. It’s built into the water bill.

burliman, to asklemmy in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

Just imagine that one person in Europe about 30,000 years ago who found himself stuck in some hole in the ground, alone and broken, finally dying of thirst and infection, who left behind four kids and his bonded life partner. They didn’t know where he went, and in only a season she had paired with another mate in the clan. Within four years anything said about this man had wilted to almost never, and forget about anything having been written down or logged in any way.

Forgotten to time.

It didn’t take long then. Might take longer now. But time will still forget us all. Make your mark while you’re around, because after that no one will give a shit.
