cerement, to linux in ELI5 the whole Wayland vs X11 going on.
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

unless you are a developer, there’s not a whole lot to worry about – you’ll switch from one to the other when your distro switches and, chances are, you’ll never notice

the drama comes from the fact that the Linux community loves choices (and arguing over those choices) and, as @skullgiver points out, most of the choices have fallen by the wayside over the years

the explanation I got a long time ago is that when something gets so bad that nothing you can do will change it is the time you sit back, crack a beer, and admit “no worries”

joke going around about silicon valley during height of dot com, something like 1:10 female to male ratio – “The odds are good but the goods are odd.”

cerement, to piracy in What linux program do you use to rip CDs (just audio)
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

abcde uses whatever current codecs you have installed, it doesn’t do any of its own encoding

cerement, to comicstrips in Love is a 5 letter word
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

‘u’ was the lowercase form, ‘V’ was the uppercase form

cerement, (edited ) to privacy in privacy seems interesting, i guess I'll see what's it about didn't really think of it much when i moved from Canada to the eu
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

Startpage was bought out by advertising company System1

  • EDIT
  • Qwant seems decent
  • a lot of claims Duckduckgo has morphed into being a frontend for Bing
  • SearXNG (updated replacement for SearX) gets good reviews, but have to be prepared to hop instances as Google blocks them
  • Kagi is a subscription service that people seem to love
cerement, to asklemmy in The year is 2025. President-for-life Trump watches the Hunger Games on Netflix for the first time and decides he wants to see it in real life. Which tribute do you place your bets on?
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

considering he’s perfectly willing to sacrifice the entire country …

  • Eleanor Roosevelt: And how many men have you killed?
  • Lyudmila Pavlichenko: Not men, fascists. Three hundred nine.
cerement, to asklemmy in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

even simpler – Firefox will auto-detect a lot of search engines – right-click in the search/address bar and if Firefox can detect it, bottom option will be to add that engine to your list

cerement, to asklemmy in Is there any way to flag OC lemmy/fediverse posts? Maybe an optional checkbox "OC lemmy/fediverse content" or something that marks the post with an OC badge or something similar?
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar
  • “none of the major communies have that hint in their description”
    • because the “[OC]” convention predates Lemmy by a LONG shot (easily predates Reddit as well)
  • “I have not seen [OC] on any post in /memes”
    • any of the c/memes communities are not going to be focusing (or care) about original content – and since most memes are closer to the Ship of Theseus (or more accurately, layered palimpsests), it’s hard to call it OC – the current poster would be closer to a conductor or a DJ than to a creator …
cerement, to asklemmy in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

Random SearX Redirector – basically just that, sends your search to a random working SearXNG instance

cerement, to asklemmy in Would reverting back to tribes or city-states not be sufficient to save us from ourselves?
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

we can have civilization that isn’t self-destructive – instead of breaking apart into tribal groups, one factor that would have a bigger impact is to re-separate the direct connection we have between wealth and power

cerement, to asklemmy in how similar are other North American countries to USA??
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

more similarity between Western Canada and Western US than between Western US and Eastern US …
