What Tweak, Program, ... changes a Desktop Environment from unusable to great for you?

I have used Linux on and off for 15 years. I consider myself a casual user and stuck to the mainstream DEs (mostly KDE, XFCE and some Cinnamon). I don’t like Gnome but Dash to Panel at least makes it usable for me. As for tweaks, I always move KDE’s taskbar to the top of the screen rather than bottom.

They didn’t include my distro of choice (Gentoo) or my desktop environment (TDE)

To be fair, these would both be absolutely terrible suggestions for beginners.

It must be, because there’s no way vanilla Arch is the most-used Linux distro, even among gamers.

I use my laptop for work all day every (week)day. It runs EndeavourOS and I haven’t had any problems - if anything I’ve encountered fewer annoyances than with any other distro I’ve tried to date (Pop, Fedora, Mint, OpenSUSE, Debian). I don’t use Btrfs but I do use Timeshift as well as Syncthing to back up files to a file server at home.

I haven’t felt the desire to install Arch, and TBH I’m not sure what the benefit might be because I’d just configure it to be basically the same as EOS anyway.

I actually use Arch as the OS for thousands of computers for my work that end up in customer hands, who expect stability.

TBF it isn’t really - only about 12% of their revenue. It’s more of a means to lock people into their other products.

I wouldn’t compare it to Krita - it’s more like Illustrator (or perhaps Inkscape if looking for a FOSS equivalent, although it isn’t quite up to par in terms of features or workflow).

No problem! I really wish Serif/Affinity would port their suite of apps to Linux. Although it’s proprietary software, their underdog status vs. Adobe would still be a good fit in the ecosystem, I think.

FWIW I like LibreOffice for presentations, but for text documents I prefer OnlyOffice (which looks and behaves exactly like Word)

I’m glad it worked out for you. In my case they are really not comparable, especially when working with text. Inkscape can’t even do bullet points or paragraph spacing.

Affinity Designer is the only reason I have a Windows VM. I really wish I could get it fully working on WINE - I have it installed but it can’t save files.

If you have a server or second computer on your network you can use Syncthing as a kind of cloud-drive-esque bacup.

Best distro for Lenovo Carbon X1

I have a Lenovo Carbon X1 that is a few years old (7th gen), and I am running Fedora 38.5 with GNOME 44.5. The issue is that the system does not sleep properly. If I close the lid, nothing suspends properly, so if it is not on a charger or shut down it will die within several hours in my bag. Are there any distros that handle...

I have an X1 gen 9 and sleep-on-close worked just fine with Fedora for the time I used that distro (although it was KDE, not GNOME). Every other distro I tried worked as expected in that respect.

Fedora is also Wayland only, which I wouldn’t recommend to a newbie with an old laptop.

Pop is the distro that finally made me a Linux full-timer after 15 years. I don’t use it anymore but I’ll always be grateful to the devs at system76.

Galileo is the name of the “release”, which while somewhat of a misnomer for a rolling-release distro, is something EndeavourOS has done since the beginning. The current release is called Cassini Nova.
