I’m perfectly aware of what Ubuntu Pro is, and the difference between Ubuntu main and universe.

The current meme implies that Ubuntu/Canonical have actively disabled safety/security features in the form of withholding security updates, unless you pay for Ubuntu Pro subscription. The Ubuntu package support hasn’t changed with the introduction of Ubuntu Pro. The packages that were supported by Canonical prior to this are supported the same way today. The packages that were community supported prior to this are supported the same way today. Without Ununtu Pro.

If you think the meme implies that, then surely you must think that the message printed by Ubuntu’s apt upgrade command in the screenshot implies that too, right?

One of the packages listed in this screenshot is libavcodec, which is required by things like VLC (which is in Ubuntu universe, which is enabled by default).

If you think it is perfectly fine for Canonical to do the work to patch that library and then withhold the security update from the vast majority of Ubuntu users who won’t sign up for Ubuntu Pro… we’ll have to agree to disagree.

tomb looks like a nice wrapper around LUKS but it doesn’t appear to support creating a sparse file, so, it will immediately use however much space you allocate to it.

(I think it doesn’t support a sparse backing file because I searched the word “sparse” on their github, and for the word “seek” (which is the dd argument for creating a sparse file) in the tomb bash script, and both searches yielded no results.)

that creates encrypted archives, but doesn’t provide a mountable filesystem (which is what OP means by “real-time”).

But seriously, did he? which one? I’m not familiar with that.

But even if he did release something under one, I would be extremely surprised if he called a non-free license “open source” as FUTO is doing here.

you can see what instances your instance vlemmy.net federated with at vlemmy.net/instances and yes diggit.xyz is currently there. you can find some of their communities here or paste a specific community URL from diggit.xyz/communities in your instance’s search box to cause it to federate if it isn’t yet.

As a new member of the lemmy.ml admin team I’ve also been removing a lot of posts from here which belong in lemmy_support, which I think is worthwhile for preventing this community from becoming a boring list of support questions.

To the many people who are flagging them: please read the examples above and don’t flag every post that is about lemmy; only flag ones that are actually concrete support questions. And do feel free to actually answer these questions before flagging them, so that the person asking doesn’t necessarily need to re-post it.
