dpkonofa, to memes in Both beliefs are fine, but please realize the hypocrisy

There’s no hypocrisy here.

On one hand, the belief in a god doesn’t just end there. There are beliefs in what that god does and what he has control over. So it’s completely logical to believe that there’s no god (although, as someone else pointed out, it’s also not random arrangements of atoms).

On the other hand, simulation theory is a logical theory to rationalize the “purpose” of why we exist. It’s not a belief. The simulation doesn’t respond to prayers or requests. It’s simply conjecture or hypothesis to explain the “why” of the universe. No one who talks about simulation theory (much less who “believes” in it) pretends that the creator of the simulation is uniquely interested in them and responds to their requests and tells them how to live their life. In fact, that would go against the entire concept of simulation theory.

Religion and religious belief have specific definitions. This feels just as dishonest as people claiming that LGBTQ ideology is a religion or that evolution is a “belief”.

dpkonofa, to piracy in Love devs' attitude towards piracy, TruePianos v1.9.8 (audio VSTi plugin)

This is what I do with movies. I still, to this day, do not understand what possible purpose studios have for including 3 minutes of copyright warnings and other bullshit ahead of movies that people paid for. Pirates don’t see any of that shit, morons, and the people who are ripping these films already are ignoring the warnings. What the hell?

dpkonofa, (edited ) to piracy in Sony Steals Customers' Purchased Content - Piracy is COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED!

Good lord… you can point out how shitty Sony is for taking away purchased content without being sensationalist and claim this justifies piracy. Whoever wrote this sucks.

Edit: Oh god… It’s Rossman. Of course it’s dishonest.

dpkonofa, to asklemmy in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

To be fair, it wasn’t Dave’s idea or something he supported. It was bassist Nate Mendel’s message that they were, admittedly, amplifying. Even the info on their website had a disclaimer that listed it as “being displayed at the request of Nate Mendel”.

I think they all regret being involved in amplifying that message too, including Nate. In the 20 years since they initially broke support with the people involved, they’ve played several shows in support of HIV/AIDS awareness groups, fundraised for Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, and every tour they do now has some kind of fundraising or auctions to support AIDS education or LGBTQIA+ rights.

It feels like they know now, in hindsight of course, that it was harmful and have at least tried to do more good to make up for it. Mendel was even quoted saying that the only reason he did it was because he thought he was helping people, not hurting them.

dpkonofa, to lemmyshitpost in People in this community don't know what a shitpost is

This is a post-shit shitpost comment to make you aware that this is a shit post.

dpkonofa, to linuxmemes in Yeah, very sorry that this app is Windows only, would love to switch to Mac

Tell me you’ve never used a Mac before without telling me.

dpkonofa, to lemmyshitpost in The four houses dads belong to.

In my experience, Dewalt has been the best in terms of balance between reliability, flexibility, and cost. Milwaukee is probably the most reliable but also the most limited. Ryobi are cheap junk. Makita tools I haven’t used but I’ve been told repeatedly that they used to be awesome but are now cheap junk.

All of these companies have at least a few items that are cheap junk (like most of the bluetooth speaker stuff…wtf?) but some are worse than others.

dpkonofa, to asklemmy in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

Except you did. You’re literally on a discussion where you posted Dave Grohl because of something he was a part of for maybe 2 or 3 years that wasn’t even his idea to begin with while ignoring everything he’s done for 20+ years since.

And now you’re being dishonest about it.

dpkonofa, to memes in Spare a dollar?

No they didn’t. They put 99.99% down. There’s $1 left.

dpkonofa, to asklemmy in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

No one is hand waving anything away. Nate is a member of the band. The message on the website was clear that it was his message.

You make it seem like people can’t change their views based on new information. It’s not like they could go back in time and not do those things after the fact. They’ve done far more in support of AIDS education. It’s not fair to vilify them for something they did for a few years while ignoring everything they’ve done since for more than 20 years.

dpkonofa, to asklemmy in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

Bari Weiss is not someone to give your time to so thanks for posting that. Nearly everything she writes now is dishonest and she pretends to espouse liberal ideas while constantly taking conservative positions and then calling herself a “left-leaning centrist”. It’s hot garbage.

dpkonofa, to piracy in Sony Steals Customers' Purchased Content - Piracy is COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED!

That’s the thing, though. I’m not denying that what they’re doing is wrong. They shouldn’t be able to do that. They should either be required to refund those purchases or they shouldn’t be allowed to remove them. Either way, that doesn’t justify piracy. This is just people who already are pirating finding a reason to justify it for themselves after the fact to make them feel better.

dpkonofa, to risa in Logic and Miracles

No, seriously… how do they work?

dpkonofa, to memes in Business is going well

There are a ton of reasons not to like it and they’re evident on Lemmy pretty notably, let alone other platforms. The entire idea of being able to defederate and federate at will is a big feature of these platforms but they’re also the part that people like the least. If the server you’re on defederates from another server you like, you have no choice but to start all the way from the beginning if you need to choose another instance to join. At the same time, each instance gets its own version of every single community. If you join an instance that federates with lots of other instances, you’re very likely to see the exact same posts multiple times since each community is completely unique and separate (again, a feature for some, a boon for others).

Federation is great for a few reasons and really horrible for others. It’s not the single answer that works for everyone.

dpkonofa, to linux in Some of y'all need to see this and drop the superiority complex...

It took Microsoft 98 attempts the first time! Then it took them an entire Millennium. Then 2000 attempts after that. And then after 12 more attempts, they’ve decided they need to change the keyboard… I’d say ain’t too bad.
