There’s absolutely no evidence that this is going to be the case. All that happened is that the CEO made a dumb comment and CEOS are always making dumb comments doesn’t mean anything.

echodot, to piracy in The way of the Blockbuster 2: Electric Boogaloo

The fact that there are 11 quadrillion streaming services now makes me suspect that there actually cannot be a secret cabal of shady business types running the world. Because they are all far too interested in competing with each other to actually notice that if they stop doing that then they’d be better off.

I get what you’re saying but copyright is necessary otherwise nobody would create anything. If you can’t get compensated for your work then why put the effort in?

Hollywood wouldn’t exist without copyright and you might say oh well Hollywood doesn’t produce much good, but it does produce the vast majority of media you probably consume. I’m not saying you’re completely wrong but I don’t think you can just go Copyright = Bad, and leave it at that.

I know that’s treason talk

echodot, (edited ) to risa in Space is 2D, right?

Sure but there are star systems that are above and below the exact ecliptic of the galactic plane. We’re not on the ecliptic that’s why you can’t see the milky way as well in the southern hemisphere because we’re kind of below it.

If a ship was travelling from Sol to Arcturus it would travel up (relative to the galactic plane) because we’re slightly below it and it’s considerably above it. The galaxy is very thin compared to its width, but it’s still of thousands of light years high.

echodot, (edited ) to asklemmy in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?

Pixel phones and I believe Samsung phones just light up the OLED display to let you know that there is notification. An independent LED was only necessary because screens would have to light up the whole display to indicate notification, but now we have better screens so that isn’t necessary.

echodot, to piracy in I have received a copyright infringement alert, what should I answer?

That’s just how legalese is written. It’s like variables in programming they tell you what the thing is and then they tell you what they’re going to call it for the rest of the document.

I guess it originally saved them hand writing “B&H Film, Video and Television Media Production LLC” every time. Of course these days you could just do a fine and a replace, so I’m not sure why they don’t, but it’s just become standard lawyer at this point.

echodot, (edited ) to risa in It's surprisingly easy to mix up a couple of coordinates

Except the Stargate also dematerializes you. Also there’s no way of guaranteeing that the gate on the other end is open and there’s apparently no safety protocols to ensure that it is so you could open the gate and then step through and just die.

Oh you know it could be underwater.

Or in space.

Or around a black hole in which case you die even if you don’t enter.

Really they’re actually quite dangerous technology and definitely not safe.

Also sometimes they accidentally time travel you

How are they tagging everyone though? Where’s this database they’re comparing against?

If this is like any other government project it won’t work, it will cost 10 million pounds, and is developed by a company that previously specialized in the manufacture of plastic cutlery.

echodot, to gaming in You know what? I'll just wait...

No one would which is why it’s not happening. Even a collectors edition super deluxe version would not cost that much.

All that he’s saying is that by his super unrealistic view of the market the game should retail for about $150 but I suspect that even he knows that it will never sell at that price. Even if he doesn’t he isn’t the one that actually picked the price the marketing team will tell him that won’t work.

This is such a non-story. It’s like reporting every time that a Nintendo executive says something stupid about copyright, they’re always saying stupid stuff.

echodot, to privacyguides in It seems Gen Z is just fine with parents knowing where they are all the time

I never cared that my parents knew where he was because I was never trying to do anything particularly nefarious and my parents weren’t completely buttheads.

But this was pre mobile phone days (my first phone was a Nokia Ngage), so if I went out they wouldn’t be able to contact me in an emergency so it made sense to say oh I’m going to x house here is ther phone number. Now that mobile phones exist maybe that requirement no longer exists.

Language can evolve all at wants, but Americans are still wrong whenever they say it.

Language has to evolve into something, the Americans seem to be trying to make language evolve away from coherence. You’re probably the type that says using the word literally to mean figuratively is acceptable as well.
