Hollywood to UK Govt: Investigating Pirates "Increasingly Difficult" * TorrentFreak (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Summary: A recent UK government inquiry into the challenges faced by the film and high-end television industry has recently received submissions from major Hollywood studios advocating for KYC (know your customer) rules for hosting providers, similar to banking regulations to identify money laundering. If adopted, this would...

filister,

You realise that you can very easily refund Steam games if you haven’t played more than 2 hours and had the game for no more than 14 days. I know it isn’t optimal but still an option to try out a game with less risk. Plus I am usually waiting for sales to buy my games as there are very few games worth 60€ in my opinion.

The not so uplifting part is that most of their parents are either dead or were not at the hospital, and I really hope some of those babies would be able to reunite with their parents even though I doubt it.

Z-Library Blog: "Unprecedented seizure of our domains with books on rare languages" (z-library.se)

Today we are forced to share some sad news - yesterday many of our domains were seized again. We should highlight that the majority of the seized domains were not mirrors of the Z-Library website. Instead, they were separate sub-projects, containing only books in rare languages of the world, and their blocking is perplexing. For...

What is the deal with Palestine and Hamas?

For mental health reasons, I had taken myself out of most political topics. But lately there seems to be a surge of talk about Palestine and Hamas (forgive me if I spelled this wrong). I do know it’s something to do with land rights, but it also seems to be so much more at the same time. I’m not trying to start any fights. I...

filister,

And it’s not like Israel didn’t drop bombs on the south you know? Nor that forced displacement of people doesn’t amount to a war crime. And one should expect a country having such a sizeable military superiority to be a little bit more concerned about civilian casualties and human suffering, but apparently they care very little.

And if you want to see it from a different perspective. Israel used the killing of 1200 Israeli citizens a pretext to kill 11K and counting civilians, cut their electricity, food, fuel and water, considerably restricting the humanitarian aid entering the enclave and almost completely destroying a city that was once hosting 1.1M people.

After continuously refusing to admit that with their own actions they have created a humanitarian catastrophe and refused all international calls for humanitarian pauses or ceasefire.

No one is refusing their right to defend themselves, but the way they are doing it is very much recalling a blind revenge and with those actions they portrayed themselves in not a very good light, even though western politicians are very adamant on publicly condemning them.

Mind you that during that time there were an increase of violent settlers attacks in the West bank, a lot of Palestinians got evicted, killed, injured with the silent approval of the authorities and the IDF, which is additionally stirring the conflict.

filister,

Am I the only one bothered by the shape of the trackpad? I mean it looks very high but also very narrow, or is it just from the point of view?

Other than that, congratulations. And keep in mind that Linux is a giant sink hole where you can lose yourself easily.

filister,

Your point being?

filister,

I am also not a fan of this website, but NVIDIA proprietary drivers are notoriously bad especially with Wayland, so I was thinking that people might find it useful and upgrade their drivers.

Are there r/WorldNews Israel bots or am I hallucinating

I just noticed that there are quite a few users on Reddit from r/WorldNews who are defending Israel unequivocally and when I checked some of the users they seemed to be engaging on topics only about Israel/Palestine and they seem to be extremely active, so I have checked the Internet and there are even some older BBC article and...

Websites to download cracked software for Windows?

Yes, I have looked in the megathread. Specifically under the sections “All Purpose”, “Tools”, and “Software”… however, I didn’t find any general, all purpose websites for cracked software. Or at least, the megathread never had something in it that said “great website for cracked software”....

filister,

Why don’t you simply use open source software solutions. I find this software to be of greater quality and better than closed source software. You can find open source to pretty much everything nowadays.

filister,

There is libre office, which is a great replacement for MS Office.

filister,

That’s Microsoft to blame. Their so-called “open” OOXML document standard is so complicated that it’s almost impossible to implement it, a very interesting read on the topic: tfir.io/never-use-microsofts-ooxml-pseudo-standar…

But I would say the Libre office should be good enough for 98% of the usage and you would hardly find any interoperability issues, due to the constant dedication of their developers who reverse engineered a lot of MS shenanigans.

filister,

Can you give me an example?

filister,

That’s not really the case for the majority with some exceptions of course. So which open source software has the worst UI/UX without any alternative?

filister,

I am not an expert but I think you can achieve some things in Linux that won’t be possible under Windows, thanks to pipewire and Jack, giving you a lot more control. I would definitely recommend you to check out JACK and pipewire. Ubuntu studio is an example of beginner-friendly Linux distribution that’s audio/video production centric that comes with everything installed and configured. If I was you I would at least check it out.

Additionally, there is a plethora of open source software, like Audacity, Mixxx, Ardour, etc.

And to be honest, the risk of using cracked software and catching malware is much higher and if you do audio production for a living I would strongly suggest you to avoid it if possible, not to mention any legal complications that might arise of using cracked software!

filister,

FreeCAD or Libre CAD, and LMMS are options, but not sure how feature rich they are.

filister,

Yes, the whole OOXML is one hot mess.

filister,

It is also possible to install libredirectif you are using Firefox Nightly on Android mike.sg/…/how-to-use-libredirect-on-android/. You can disable the YouTube app and this would force your device to open the YouTube links in your default browser.

filister,

I am using Newpipe, but libredirect can redirect more websites, not only YouTube.

filister,

Yes, one more cynical man would say that they kind of intentionally let the destruction and the casualties to be so high, so that they can justify the retaliation which would involve a couple of times more civilian casualties on the other side and they can use this as pretext to tighten their restrictions and increase the buffer zone or simply grab that land for themselves.

Do you think we will ever have affordable housing again in our lifetime?

Considering how crazy expensive accommodations have become the last couple of years, concentrated in the hands of greedy corporations, landlords and how little politicians seem to care about this problem, do you think we will ever experience a real estate market crash that would bring those exorbitant prices back to Earth?

Are search engines indexing the fediverse?

I was wondering if the search engines are indexing the fediverse. Because recently Google search became so bad so I was always putting Reddit at the end to get some not so generic results and I haven’t even noticed to get any replies pointing to the fediverse ever. So I was wondering if search engines were actually indexing...
