Do you prefer PC or laptop? (freeonlinesurveys.com)

I was having a friendly discussion with someone this morning about PC and Laptops for work/education stuff, he suggested that I could use a chromebook for all this stuff and this would be a good idea and make things easier. I strongly disagreed with this, mainly because I hate laptops, the keyboard and touchpad make me angry and...

I live offgrid in a campervan, which places limits the amount of power and interior space I can devote to computing. So a vanilla laptop for me.

the keyboard and touchpad make me angry

External kb/mice are allowed. :-) Using a mechanical kb with my laptop right now.

99% Invisible had a mini-episode about movie novelizations. I think the Star Wars novelizations were mentioned in it, and the whole thing was rather interesting. Particularly where the author has limited info and has to guess about what might happen in the movie.

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Angel
  • the Night Stalker (70s-era occult/neo-noir) Edit: holy crap, there was a mid-2000s remake of the series and whole season is on youtube.

I’m seeing a pattern here…

What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

  • "They’re your family so you have to maintain a relationship with them’
  • "man up"

Superpower: catching dropped objects in mid-air, including objects dropped by other people standing near me.

Unfortunately it’s a function of hypervigilance, which is quite hard on my nerves.

Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

I withhold downvotes until it means “this is disinformation, or misinformation so wrong-headed it could mislead those new to the topic”

I heard a podcast episode about a guy who homebrewed insulin in an area of Nazi occupation and saved a bunch of people. Warsaw ghetto perhaps?

What’s it like working night shift?

  • constant fatigue
  • constantly explaining to the same people over and over that you are not available in the daytime because that’s when you sleep

source: worked night shift for many years

I once had a b2b customer (store owner) tell me that having different pricing for wholesale and retail customers was racist.

I’m pretty sure meant discriminatory but even that doesn’t make much sense.

fratermus,

He’s absolutely correct.

He said it was racist, so I’m gonna stick with he’s not correct.

The mistake that you are making, is thinking that all forms of discrimination are bad.

I am aware of the formal and common uses of the word.

I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

To my knowledge there’s no stagnant water on my property, I’ve run water through all my ptraps, and I’m careful to not leave doors open. Yet at any given time there’s at least 3 in my house. I can’t sleep, i can’t sit on the couch, i can’t exist in the fear of being sucked dry....

A soul is a concept to make death less scary.

Or more scary, if one doesn’t do as one is told.

You might enjoy Karl Haas' Adventures in Good Music radio show. There are some preserved on the internet archive.

Hearing ambient for the first time (specifically Eno's Music for Airports) was an epiphany. It fits the inside of my head.

Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

I think my favorite thing about Lemmy is that it feels like Reddit used to. Less negativity, more engaged users (I think). I know it will be fun to watch Reddit die, but if I put spite aside what I’m really mad at Reddit about is more about what Reddit became and maybe part of that is when the general internet user started...

Karma as used on Reddit is fairly useless. A web-of-trust style karma system (do people whose opinions I respect also respect this person's opinions) would be helpful for sifting through the crap.

Echo chambers are caused by exposure to only one POV. I suppose WoT karma could be used to build an even more insular echo chamber if someone wanted that.

But I am talking about valuing a person's critical thinking skills, their ability to formulate and express reasonable opinions whether or not I agree with their specific conclusions. If that person finds something challenging, interesting, or fruitful then I want to read it, too.
