I agree with almost everything you said. I’m not referring to services like Netflix as owning. More specifically the recent debacle with Sony removing access to PURCHASED content. I would happily buy my movies and TV shows on something like Google play movies or Apple TV. My issue is I can’t trust any of these corps not to pull the rug out from under me. Their track record says they will. It’s a question of when not if. We need a streaming equivalent of Spotify for TV and movies. Obviously it would be much more expensive than Spotify, but I would happily pay for the convenience of having anything I want as much as I want on one platform/interface. Streaming sucks right now where libraries are spread across platforms with varying interfaces, bitrate etc. shit just sucks lol

Mandatory reminder that if buying isn’t owning then piracy isn’t stealing.

I wouldn’t really use that comparison. The discord update resembles the old one. But old reddit and new reddit are damn near unrecognizable to one another.

ilickfrogs, to asklemmy in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@ilickfrogs@lemmy.world avatar

Only when I’m googling something that points to reddit. But even then not really as I’m using an extension that redirects all reddit links to their webarchive version.

ilickfrogs, to asklemmy in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
@ilickfrogs@lemmy.world avatar

I agree, I think following this initial burst of users and our feedback we'll get there with time.

ilickfrogs, to asklemmy in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?

Up until 3rd party app devs announced they're converting their apps to Lemmy? Yes.

Now, absolutely the fuck not. Reddit is a cesspool compared to when I first joined in 2013. Lemmy feels a lot more like reddit did then. It's quaint and cozy here. Yes I'd like to see this place grow some more. But 1/10th the size of reddit would be plenty. Most reddit users don't contribute anything useful anyways so no loss there.
