jmcs,

Star Trek TNG had a Space Loki on steroids driving key points of the plot so what’s the issue with a Space Yggrasil? Star Trek was never supposed to be hard sci-fi in the first place.

Concepts inspired by the idea of the World Tree are also common in other sci-fi works.

jmcs,

The relationship between statistics and the base facts is the difference between it being a useful tool or the butt of a Mark Twain’s joke.

jmcs,

The first response to the latest release is Everything’s broken (was: Debian GNU/Hurd 2023 released!) and they pretty much beg you to only run it in a VM. So we can safely assume it’s going to be stable until the end of the year.

jmcs,

Even if you exclude that, I can’t imagine a Solanum tuberosum smoothie would be that delicious

jmcs,

That system didn’t prevent most Dalai Lamas from being horrible rulers.

This means they are going to open borders so people actually have a place to go, right? Right? (Insert Anakin and Padme meme)

jmcs,

Well, it does have a court scene…

jmcs,

“Turnabout Intruder” has also been effectively retconned all the way to hell.

Why delete unused code and assets or optimize anything when your player base built their personality around your game? They will buy a 3rd SSD at the same time they buy the same game for the 4th time.

jmcs,

Of course, everyone knows you start development of a new game from the code base of the previous, but you aren’t allowed to change or delete any of the old code, you need to copy paste the functions and append a version number. It’s called version control.

jmcs,

Godzilla is nuclear powered so he’s not limited by biological energy sources. There’s still the entire issue of the form factor, but for that I like John Scalzy’s take on the Kaiju Preservation Society.

jmcs,

It’s still the worst Star Trek Intro by far, and it sticks out as a sore thumb.

jmcs, (edited )

Not exactly news, but he is an homophobic misogynist who systematically sexually harassed actresses in particular and harassed all workers around him in general. And on top of that he’s responsible for Star Trek Enterprise’s intro.

jmcs,

In Spanish questions are phrased the same way as affirmations, when you are speaking the only difference is the intonation. Without a mark to say you are starting to read a question it’s possible that the meaning changes in the end which would be annoying. (Source: Portuguese is the same but has no inverted question mark, and sometimes it’s mighty annoying, especially with long questions)

jmcs,

Imagine if you could ask questions like “James, Mary, and Jack went to the market last Saturday to buy a shovel, a black bag, and some gloves, to bury Karen’s corpse in the deep dark woods?”

jmcs,

Yes you can. I keep mine in the oven.

jmcs,

It’s to reduce the profile they expose to the planetary defenses.

jmcs,

Lots of tech companies might be interested. For example, at my work we are now stuck half way between x64 and arm, both on the server side and on the developers side (Linux users are on x64 and Mac users are on arm). While multiarch OCI/docker containers minimize the pains caused by this, it would still be easier to go back to a single architecture.

jmcs,

If you build a docker image on an ARM Mac OS with default settings it will happily run on Linux on ARM, the same for a Go app compiled with GOOS=“linux”, for example. Of course you can always fix the issues that pop up by also specifying the architecture, but people often forget, and in the case of docker it has significant performance penalties.

jmcs,

The teleporter is already at the edge of their technological capabilities anyway, to the point they have to resort to some hacks to make it work.

ST PicardLike keeping “common biology” like common DNA sections in the transporter’s firmware to not have to care about all individual aspects.

And this is even without accounting for malfunctions. Can you imagine eating the wrong vegetable and ending up tuvixed with poop?

jmcs,

In Discovery they explicitly show it going full Q when testing Georgiou, so it’s entirely possible it allowed people to do stupid stuff as a test or a lesson.
