That’s fair. I don’t think I personally use ligatures anywhere and I’m not experiencing any issues with foot after using it for a few years so I might just have to stay blissfully ignorant on this one ;)

This is the big thing that all these Nvidia comments miss. It’s not up to Wayland to support a given GPU. Nvidia is actively hostile to Linux users. If you aren’t making money with cuda there are zero reasons to choose Nvidia on a Linux machine over the competition. I’ve been on Wayland for almost a decade now and there’s no way I’m going back to X at this point.

You could also look into using sixel. It’s kinda like the kitty protocol but older and terminal agnostic.

If you base your opinion of vim from memes you are missing out. Anyone who can’t take 10 minutes to type vimtutor in their terminal is not someone to base an opinion on. These memes come mostly from impatient people that can’t read the docs. It’s a fantastic text editor.

That being said, it’s not meant to be used for written words it’s meant to write code and config files. You want to look for a word processor.

Abiword, etherpad, focuswciter are probably the next 3 biggest on Linux behind libre and open office.

Personally I prefer markdown for most things these days but it’s not exactly meant for word processing either.

Your parents sound more like gen x to me, but there are blurred lines between all the generations.

Your comments about tech understanding is almost completely opposite to most other comments, which is my main reason for thinking that. But I know plenty of millennials that are shit with tech too.

My experience in IT is that most of gen z doesn’t care about understanding anything on the Internet outside of social media, and they do excel at social media compared to others but I see fewer and fewer young people interested in how any of it works. They seem to be completely content with consuming media but even most of the big game streamers are millennials it seems like. Gen z seems completely ok with walled gardens and black box services as long as they ‘work’ .

If you aren’t using the super key to access that menu you are using gnome wrong imo. Three finger swipe on track pad is also a great way to access the same menu.

KDE is fuckin fantastic, but it aims to replicate the windows ui and workflow. If that’s what you want then I highly recommend it over gnome. But personally I don’t think that desktop UX should be stuck in the early 2000s Redmond style. Once I changed my habits to use my windows button on the keyboard instead of moving my mouse all over hell to access the menu it’s all I ever use. Mouse is just a fallback when the other hand is busy. I try every new KDE version because I kind of hate how the gnome devs act sometimes, but I can’t get used to that workflow anymore.

I hope cosmic is great.

Agree to disagree I guess. I’ve tried changing the workflow in KDE to even resemble gnome and it just feels like you have to have a start menu with a taskbar. Sure, you could put that taskbar anywhere but it still operates the same as a windows 98 taskbar.

Maybe I’m just not used to the KDE way of doing things but next year will be my 20th anniversary of using Linux. I’ve tried every desktop environment and window manager. All of them.

I respect the KDE project but KDE makes me feel like I’m using a windows gui on top of Linux.

I subscribed to this channel for Linux news, not furry pics. I block furry communities because I don’t want to see this stuff, ever. I surely don’t want it to come through my ‘subscribed’ feed that I feel safe scrolling through at work. It’s just not the right community to post this imo. There are literally dozens of places for this content elsewhere on the fediverse let alone the rest of the net.

People wonder why Lemmy isn’t catching on with the general population but this is a prime example of why Lemmy feels kinda jank. I shouldn’t have to worry about weird fetishy cartoons on my tech community.

I Made Screen Brightness Control on Gnome Much Better (gitlab.gnome.org)

Anyone here struggle with trying to adjust brightness on Gnome in low light? At the low end, the steps are way too far apart, and at high brightness they’re almost imperceptible. Every other operating system uses a brightness curve that better matches human perception....

I’ve been using this for a while now. It works great for me, basic fan control and temp info. I haven’t used any of the overclocking features though.

There was somebody on the Linux reddit with a self hostable ebook app just a week or so. It looked slick but wasn’t really that useful for me. Might be worth a look.
