lemann, to piracy in Anyone able to download this series that is geoblocked and only available in china?

Because it’s from china doesn’t mean anything though lol. So are our phones, clothes, bikes, car electronics, batteries, practically all electronics except hard drives etc.

Don’t forget that there are talented individuals everywhere, regardless of whatever perceptions exist about their country of origin.

In this case, OP wants access to what they consider to be a good show, and that’s that 🤷‍♂️🏴‍☠️

lemann, to asklemmy in Is it normal that some domain name registrars and hosting companies have an unsecured connection?

That registrar is operated by Freenom who is currently in court with Facebook.

If you try and register a domain there you’re taken to their correctly configured main site AFAIK, but the ability to register a domain has been locked since the court case

lemann, to piracy in PSA To people watching YouTube with AdBlockers

Freetube on desktop + newpipe/libretube on mobile is pretty much my combo. I very, very rarely visit youtube’s site directly anymore lol

lemann, to asklemmy in What are Lemmy's unwritten rules?

And don’t call piracy stealing.

The companies should make it nice and easy for us to watch everything in one place, in high quality, from any device, for nice and cheap! …oh, that was Netflix a decade ago ☹️

Pretty difficult to convince the likes of minds on Lemmy to pay $100 for every streaming service in the world - to get a pretty awful experience, when you can get a much, much better experience without giving up your hard earned $$

I will fly my flag high for the free seas 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🚢

lemann, to asklemmy in Software registration lock

Fight with your wallet by…

  • 🏴‍☠️
  • An OSS/”source available" alternative
  • Buy alternative from another company that has a less restrictive licensing scheme, make sure you are happy with the definitions in the EULA

If you want to go the legal route, see what they define “lifetime license” as in the software EULA. I am not a legal expert, so ensure you get professional guidance should you choose this

If you still have the original computer kicking around, depending on how the software licensing works they may have a license file saved somewhere (maybe in appdata, or program files). Grab that and pop it in the same location on the new system and see if that works

lemann, to asklemmy in What are your experiences with polyamory, first or second hand?

I’m mono myself, but it’s nice to read various experiences here of poly relationships.

I personally think i’m too selfish to survive in a poly environment though, and also I’m not really that interesting of a person in general - preferring time alone mostly.

Poly requires a ton of trust and communication, so for me it would fall down quickly with the wrong kind of partner(s)… especially as it takes me a while to trust others

lemann, to privacy in Question about phones: Am I overreacting?

100% this is the best choice for op IMO.

A big pro is that they literally don’t need any Google services whatsoever by the sounds of things

lemann, to linux in I am trying to edit a game save with an Hex editor but it doesn't allow me to change anything, it's frustrating

Is the hex file not saving with those editors, or is the game just not showing the new value once it’s loaded?

lemann, to piracy in Recording Spotify to your DAW, can this get your account banned?

They probably scan audio tracks uploaded to music sharing sites, a few online streaming services do this for video to identify accounts ripping the content.

If you’re doing it for personal use I see nothing to worry about

lemann, to piracy in Pirate Site Blocking Demands Intensify in the US

Mic drop

lemann, to linux in OpenSSH is about to change. (For the better.)

I delete them from the ssh config folder after installation, along with the DSA and ECDSA keys. No ed25519? No auth.

Also prevents a handful of bots from attempting SSH login into your cloud infra, a lot of them don’t support ed25519 kex

lemann, to asklemmy in What are Lemmy's unwritten rules?

Vegetarian ≠ Vegan (unless you actually mean vegetarian?)

lemann, to piracy in [Louis Rossmann] Piracy is COMPLETELY justified: Louis tries NetFlix and remembers why

It was all getting spoiled for me in social media anyway.

I thankfully haven’t seen any spoilers for anything since moving to Lemmy… on other sites it’s silly easy to accidentally run into a spoilers for anything remotely popular 😭

Unless you follow ST communities here… then oops I guess spoilers are in your feed for each episode 😳

lemann, to datahoarder in Do SSD failures follow the bathtub curve? Ask Backblaze

Interesting, from that data it seems SSD reliability so far isn’t too far off from HDDs (at least for Backblaze’s intensive cloud storage workload) despite having no moving parts…

Will be interesting to see how the reliability plays out as they build up their SSD inventory over the coming years

lemann, to piracy in Apps that shouldn't be Subscriptions

Adobe is the one company i’d never, ever, ever want to support, especially with a subscription. 🏴‍☠️ all day every day
