lemann,

In this asklemmy comm specifically?

There are two very popular asklemmy communities and they both are run differently 🤷‍♂️

lemann,

This is what I use. Also supports exporting/importing data to and from Gnome Authenticator so you have 2FA on your computer too 👍

lemann,

User looks like they’ve been banned completely! We’ll need a mod to remove this…

lemann,

Nokia 6300. Loved that thing, battery lasted all day and then some!

lemann,

Pretty much this.

They behave like standard HID devices unless they’re scripted to emulate something else, like say a network interface… not really a feasible thing to fullt mitigate, and probably not worth worrying about IMO unless you’re a bank or something

lemann,

Neat, thanks for the info!

I did some further reading into this and found out the PWM pins I’m using are controlled by their own separate timer (instead of the one used by the Arduino core for millis(), micros() etc) so definitely will be trying this out the next time I rip the cooler open 😁

lemann,

Pretty much my experience when using piped on my desktop, quick to resolve so not too much of an issue.

On the other side of things, my partner got tired of that and now uses FreeTube (which falls back to Invidious on failure IIRC)

lemann,

Before finding out about Backblaze I still did file backups to disc lol. Now the only time I touch a disc is when it’s being ripped 😂

lemann,

That’s surprising. Dell should have good Linux driver support, seeing as they offer Ubuntu pre-installed in some markets.

Saying that, we have work issued Dell Precision mobile workstations and there are constantly hardware and driver issues under Windows, where you’d expect things to work just fine…

  • the internal microphone not working (handy for meetings!)
  • the 3.5mm combo jack not working (ah, great, no backup for when the internal microphone stops working)
  • the battery handshake failing, causing the machine to not charge, stay stuck in a low performance mode, and constantly pop up Windows notifications saying the battery is not genuine
  • the presence sensor locking the laptop while you’re literally working it

Now I use a USB headset, disabled the presence sensor, and reboot the laptop repeatedly until the battery is detected as genuine

lemann,

AppArmor and SELinux sandboxing stuff pushed me to only install services with Docker on my headless machines 😣 found out most services can’t write to their own homefolder

lemann,

For opening Word documents, I’d highly recommend OnlyOffice. Has outstanding compatibility with documents originally created in Microsoft Word, and it’s free on Flathub

Another alternative if you have an existing 365 subscription would be the online version of Word in your web browser.

If you’re heavily into the 365 ecosystem though, do note that things like Onedrive compatibility aren’t all the way there on linux, so you’d miss luxuries like right-clicking a file and getting a shareable link, or sending a file to someone directly from the file manager. For these you’ll need to drag-n-drop the file into onedrive, or into your email app to send them.

Things like opening PDFs, viewing various video formats etc, are built-in and work flawlessly on pretty much all Linux distros. Support for opening encrypted PDF files should be flawless too, haven’t had issues with these myself.

Would recommend Linux Mint, or Zorin OS, as both have a pretty similar look and feel when coming from Windows

lemann,

I store my totp seeds in a separate, rarely used password manager, which then follows me on an “emergency USB” - hopefully something I won’t need to use at all

lemann,

Sync?

It’s a video of clorox being placed on a table

lemann,

Removing it can cause a bootloop in some cases, likely something in the boot process is looking for it and reinstalling that app if missing. Google’s play services recently started doing that with permissions that are revoked with root

Should be removable on a non-stock ROM though

lemann,

Yes, it’s the newer version of the two. OP has an older device

lemann,

I switched to Osmand when my bike computer got stolen and tbf I prefer Osmand, especially with the widgets and stuff set up for the cycling profile

I am pouring one out to this little champ. Stripping HDCP and letting me... archive streaming services from 2016-2023 RIP (lemmy.world)

What killed it, well after reviewing some PS4 gameplay I noticed that it was having audio issues, like it would allow some sounds but not all. It was almost as if it was receiving a 5.1 audio output but was missing the centre channel. Even though the PS4 was set to stereo....

lemann,

Seconded. I like having all my games in one place, on all my devices, with Linux support out-of-the-box thanks to Proton. Also, Steam DRM is easy to bypass with code available on GitHub if you really wanted to.

Epic does none of this for me, and I won’t support a company that called all gamers “shmucks” or whatever that C suite said

lemann,

I even took the time to find way to backup my games so I can get legal ROMs too.

I have a FHDB PS2 and soooo many games to back up 😭 ughhh.

I have a few titles that I “backed up” 🏴‍☠️ already, but i’m not looking forward to ripping my physical disks… my PS1 library took the entire day and two cd drives, sadly most of those disks were partially unreadable

lemann,

Several years ago on YouTube I was watching people rig up their own disused rail carts using battery drills, lawnmower engines and all sorts lol

lemann,

Built-in encryption in bcachefs sounds great, that’s the only thing that BTRFS has been missing for me so far.

Bonus points if it can be decrypted on boot like LUKS, and double bonus points if its scriptable like cryptsetup (retrieve key from hardware device, or network, or flash stick etc)

bcachefs.org/Encryption/

Will likely give bcachefs a spin as soon as it drops in Debian Unstable 😁

lemann,

I think this is pretty much the best solution available to OP here, aside from them getting a new device

lemann,

Grayjay requires minimum android 10, after some community feedback I believe they’re bringing it down to android 9

lemann,

I thought the piped accounts did exactly that, or is it only playlists that sync?
