How many of you run a Linux phone (Pine64, Librem etc) as your daily driver?

I was going through Pine64’s page again after I found the latest KDE announcement. With that said, I seem to see a lot of issues with firmware on the Pine, whilst the Librem is just plain out of budget for me. Was interested in how many people here run a Linux mobile as a daily driver, and how has your experience been?...

Disclaimer: I’m an android user and would love to switch to a Linux phone.

Problem with android is updates being locked by carriers or Google themselves. To get updates after 2-3 years you basically have to buy a phone that has unlockable bootloader and supports LineageOS, AND you have to have the technical skills to Install and set up LineageOS, I do, but no one else I know does, they just happily buy a new phone because app X,Y,Z stopped working on their old phone, which is perfectly usable. And if you have a phone where bootloader is locked (I’m looking at you, Verizon, EVERY PHONE THEY SELL THEY LOCK), oops there’s an expensive paperweight, can never be running anything other than Android 8 or whatever it came with.

For someone who keeps complaining about how much time you lost to Linux, you sure spend a lot of time complaining on Linux forums, bashing it.

Ahh, itsfoss.com. they had some article on “being a supercharged Joplin user” or some nonsense and suggestion 3 or 4 was “Create a notebook”… Really being a power user when you’re utilizing the most basic functionality the app was created for…

+1 for Syncthing, I use it a lot. However anyone have any methods of 1-way sync? I’d like to backup camera photos from my phone with it but not have a 2-way sync so I can delete the pictures off my phone, and not have it deleted on my server. At one point I found a discussion with the developers about this exact use case and if I remember right, they were kind or in the camp of ‘that use case extends beyond what we envision for the app and would introduce more complexities, so we’re not a big fan of introducing that feature.’

Love the sentiment, and I agree, but anti consumer surveillance tech is here to stay, sadly. Can’t tell you how many people in my life have Alexa, FireTV and random shit like that.

Interesting because I’ve had the opposite problem historically. Windows always seemed to be doing random shit in the background, doing what? I can’t tell you but it always seemed to be using the disk or CPU to do some background process, and it always happened, every day at random times oops disk churn. You’ll notice it the most with a regular hard drive because it’s slow and makes noise when its being accessed (vs. an ssd which is silent)

I’ve seen this opinion a few times so far about hexbear, so i gotta ask… wtf is hexbear.net? Is it like the equivalent of 4chan?

That was my first thought, sounds like a hardware issue, either maybe overheating? Faulty ram or ssd issues, etc

Not sure you saw my edit, but I’ve been using a Dell Latitude 7490 for years and its been perfectly fine, so the issues you’re experiencing aren’t normal. Something is definitely up with your specific laptop. Just mentioning to help you narrow down issues.

Can you explain a little bit? Which backdoors are you worried about with Qubes?

On android (though I wish I was using a true gnu/Linux phone…) I open Neo store every once in a while and peruse the explore tab, sorting by most recently updated. Neo store is a better f-droid client (a source for open source android apps)

For desktop Linux, i guess you could do the same, (though for some reason i haven’t) and peruse the free sofyware marketplace that comes with your linux distro. I also used to google articles about top 10 new open source apps for ubuntu 2023, or similar google searches. I also used to read a bunch of Linux, open source, and linux hardware related sub-reddits that I’ve been slowly trying to replace with Lemmy communities, right now I subscribe to:

C/opensource

If anyone has anymore I should subscribe to, suggest away!

I also browse YouTube which in the past has suggested videos of people reviewing new open source apps or software. Though those video suggestions have gotten worse as YouTube’s algorithms have gotten worse in the last few years.

Also in the past I’d peruse alternativeto.net to see if there’s anything better in the open source world for proprietary software, or even alternatives to existing open source software I use.

Interested to hear more about what others do!

I’ve been using a htpc for TV content for years, and I’ve finally given up and just gonna pirate all my shit now. The hoops I’ve had to jump through to get 1080p on Linux, and Netflix/prime video working on my rooted lineageos phone has pissed me off too much. Researching all the *arr software packages and which sources to get content from, this weekend.

Haha that’s awesome! These days I’ve pretty much settled on basic defaults to make life easier: Ubuntu and Gnome. Though with snaps getting more invasive, I’m considering jumping ship and moving to the OG, Debian. I settled on Ubuntu years ago when they did a ton to improve driver compatibility and automatic installation for WiFi drivers on laptops back in the Ubuntu 7/8 days (2007/2008). Briefly tried out Linux mint in 2014, and went back to Ubuntu after a few years, gnome worked a bit better for workflow than the traditional windows approach with a taskbar for open windows.

Fluxbox… Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time… Back in the days of wintel dialup modems I was trying out Linux as a teenager and trying to get modem support working to get the internet, and at one point I tried out a Linux distro, DSL (Damn small Linux) because it was set up to be installed and run from a USB flash drive with persistent storage on the drive I think. And the window manager of DSL? You guessed it, Fluxbox! Can’t believe its still around.

Been keeping an eye on postmarketOS, have been wanting to use it with a more modern phone in the USA, like a Pixel 4a or something. How has droidian been? Haven’t really heard too much about that project, its a full Linux distro? You can apt-get stuff?

If I’m reading the manual right (I don’t use i3), you’re missing ‘px’ on end of your lines, like so:

gaps inner 10px gaps outer 10px

Its weird that its not consistently needed though, for the workspace and modifying existing gaps in real time, it looks like the postfix ‘px’ isn’t needed.

I think you’re right, I’ve since moved on to Linux for my OS, but never had a reason to use WebDAV, so haven’t had the chance to test it with Linux WebDAV clients

A looong time ago, I tried using WebDAV for internal network use and I feel like there was an issue with it I didn’t like and stopped using it and instead went with smb. The issue miiight have been that if I was copying a file to a WebDAV server it didn’t give you a file copy progress? Can’t fully remember. Either way, does WebDAV give you a file copy progress now?
