How have others gotten friends/family to make the switch? I’ve been doing a cleanup of my digital life over the last year or so and am trying to move to using more privacy friendly alternatives where possible....
Just start using Signal. Don’t push it for a reason for people who don’t care, just let people know “Hey, message me here”. The more people that use it - the better for everyone - whether they benefit or not.
The second part of that is use things like WhatsApp less or not at all, but you can always start with the first part. Maybe you already have folks on signal, and you can just start messaging them there until more folks come over.
I enjoy Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup played in the terminal with ASCII graphics. I wonder whether there are other hidden gems out there which don’t get attention because they are “ugly”?
Starting to feel crushed by the weight of the world, riddled with guilt and disappointment in myself over my choices. Nothing I can do about the past though....
I get myself a nice little treat and take a break. I treat myself like someone else who I’d try to cheer up
But honestly - sounds like you need a lot more than that if you are feeling all tangled up. It’s helpful to unwind it all. With friends, with a therapist, even just talking to a stranger on the bus (or the internet)
This might not be the best community for this, but I don’t know what job I want after high school. I’m afraid of pursuing a job that I’ll end up hating. How do I figure out what job I want when I grow up?
ADHD Brains are different - so some advice that works for non-ADHD brains may or may not work.
In general, being present and meditation (in whatever way that works for you, but, generally the practice of observing your thoughts as they go by but not reacting to them) are helpful for ‘strengthening’ your thought patterns. Becoming aware of things and building up that muscle is how you can have more of that willpower.
Habits can be very difficult to build, don’t get discouraged. Find things that work for you and ways to incentivize or motivate yourself.
In case any folks who are on a lemmy instance instead of kbin see this post (Hello new users!), boost is a kbin feature, which is a different type of “software” than lemmy. The main kbin instance is kbin.social , which can interact with both Lemmy and Mastodon instances
tl;dr - kbin is different than lemmy. They all talk to each other though. Boost is kbin only
Lemmy itself is an open source software. It's developed by a community, and was originally created by two developers. It does not make money, except from things like donations or patreon.
Lemmy instances are run by different members of the community. Various folks have answered ways that instances could make money but may not make money in any ways.

Switching to more privacy friendly alternatives

How would you go about a low maintenance personal website today?
It seems like there’s a lot of ways to go about this that may be overkill, so I’m curious which may avoid that....
What are your favorite "ugly" games?
I enjoy Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup played in the terminal with ASCII graphics. I wonder whether there are other hidden gems out there which don’t get attention because they are “ugly”?
How do you cheer yourself up after a rough day? Or a rough year?
Starting to feel crushed by the weight of the world, riddled with guilt and disappointment in myself over my choices. Nothing I can do about the past though....
[SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?
This might not be the best community for this, but I don’t know what job I want after high school. I’m afraid of pursuing a job that I’ll end up hating. How do I figure out what job I want when I grow up?
What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?
I’ve realized that I’m very mentally weak and it’s impacting my success....
So how does lemmy make money?
I'm not seeing any ads, and these servers certainly have a cost.... So is this place entirely donation based, or what?
