my lug tries to help people trying to run lutris on old LTS versions and for one example we ended up having to tell them to use some .deb for lutris since ubuntu shipped a broken lutris version for a year or whatever users should always be able to depend on their package manager alone instead of side loading content. even had instances of their version of wget or curl being incompatible with winetricks and gitlab and githubs apis

please please please avoid an LTS (long term support) distro for desktop use, especially if gaming. this includes Linux mint which is based on Ubuntu LTS. the packages are painfully old and cause problems playing the latest games, particularly where they don’t work out of the box with lutris/proton/wine etc. LTS is great for servers and workstations but not end users

experienced users can make any distro work including LTS but it’s extra overhead for new folks

How do I change desktop environments on linux mint?

I am not a fan of cinnamon and i’d like to try gnome or kde plasma. i have heard great things about both and i tried gnome before, but i really hated how it worked with linux mint (particularly that it replaced the login screen with that of the ubuntu login). is there a way to avoid that? any other general tips? thank you...

if you’re trying out one or more than one DE I suggest making a new user for it, I’ve accidently messed up my dotfiles more times while DE hopping than I’d like to recall

as a root user you can move files around no problem, I’m sure there’s desktop environment hopping articles to refer to, deleting is pretty straightforward too. for my case when I added i3 and hyprland I just tried flipping between the different desktops on a new user to see if anything broke before doing it on my main account, just something I have a habit of doing after some old mishaps

not flawless but barely noticeable that it’s there. only time I’ve ever had issues was with cursor warping in one game

windows can and will destroy your bootloader at least once, show it no mercy

looking forward to trying wineland someday. got some weird cursor snapping issues on Wayland for now that need gamescope to work around on some games
