Hardware security key options?

I've been thinking about getting a hardware security key and have heard of yubikey before; but I want to see what my options are and if they are worth it in your opinion.
My current setup is a local KeePassXC database (that I sync between my PC and phone and also acts as TOTP authenticator app), I know that KeePass supports hardware keys for unlocking the database.

I am personally still of the belief that passwords are the safest when done right; but 2FA/MFA can greatly increase security on top of that (again, if done right).
The key work work together with already existing passwords, not replace them.

As I use linux as my primary OS I do expect it to support it and anything that doesn't I will have to pass on.

PS: what are the things I need to know about these hardware keys that's not being talked about too much, I am very much delving into new territory and want to make sure I'm properly educated before I delve in.

@linux @technology @technology @privacy

magikmw,

Well I might be ignorant of first principles, but I couldn’t get a nitrokey I got for testing to work with anything.

Not that yubikey is easy.

magikmw,

It makes a second hand mac viable for me. The hardware is nice, it was always the OS that made me avoid it.

magikmw,

Haven’t dug into it yet, but if that’s right then not great. Then again if something doesn’t break quickly in electronics it usually works fine for years, except maybe overheated GPUs, random RAM and HDDs.

I’m still unsure if I want to replace my 2016 Asus zenbook. Other than the aged CPU/AGPU from Intel, and unusable from the start touchpad it’s fine.

magikmw,

Rare W for google if true. Will lool for sources.

magikmw,

One gotcha is installing both as user and root, getting two sets of dependencies. I only found out after a year or so of consciously using flatpak.

I’m now taking care to make sure I only use flatpak as root. Maybe not the most secure.

Why I need extra kernel modules to be able to run Wayland on nvidia?

If i run X.org i dont need to modify my kernel or its configs, it just works well (well, well for X.org) out of box. With wayland its the other story. I need to enable nvidia-dkms module and much other stuff to should be configured. There is a whole page about enabling hyprland on nvidia....

magikmw,

Hot take, maybe it has nothing to do with being a furry, but just a cool person in general, while also being a furry.

magikmw,

I’ve been running pihole with several blocklists forever and I never see any ads.

magikmw,

TIL about kinoite, might be easier to jump from Fedora KDE than to NixOS I’ve been lazily testing.

magikmw,

There’s no release notes yet and it’s not available for download on the main release channel. Title is clickbait.

magikmw,

Me: Use threads!
Single core CPU: Do I look like a loom to you?

magikmw,

You wont know unless you fill a bug report and maintainers get around to triage it.

magikmw,

Man, you just don’t have this kind of insight anywhere outside of people into FOSS. Even with proprietary software ready to get into specifics and try to grok the issue. Kudos.

magikmw,

Post says it’s ready as a daily driver. I want to help with bug reporting, is it good enough to replace current fedora plasma or should I wait for a beta?

magikmw,

Or do what I do and don’t update for half a year. The previous version is supported for a month after the release the next-next version.

magikmw,

Maybe. Depends on the usecase. I’ve been running wayland for a year or so without trouble. Using moonlight to another machine for gaming and such.

magikmw,

As a long time Linux user, if kernel broke anything for me, and it used to fairly regularly, I would just roll back to previous kernel. Fedora makes it easy, by default you can just boot into previous version by selecting it in grub menu.

File a bug, roll back, keep the bug report subscribed and only update after it’s fixed.

magikmw,

Brain, gaslighting us for adrenaline hits every chance it can.
