@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

By now Steam’s most loyal userbase is probably the Linux Gaming community because they make it so easy to just play the games, not to mention the QoL improvements they contribute to upstream projects

Honestly it’s a blessing, hardcoded stuff can be easily circumvented by turning to 1337-speech or inserting whitespace. An AI scanning stuff would not only produce random false positives but also make the censorship actually work

neshura, to memes in Me trying to make a joke that won’t offend anyone in 2017. > My wife died in a laser accident, what is your problem?????
@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

Looked up the scene in question on YouTube and I think it’s on about the same level as six-pack shots of men in movies - decently sexualised but not problematic imo.

Regardless I think @trailing9@lemmy.ml was just continuing the joke from the meme.

neshura, to piracy in BitTorrent Pirates Won’t Receive ISP Warnings (It Will Be Something Worse)
@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

The letter is also pretty toothless since in a household with more than one person the actual infringer cannot be identified solely by IP, still better to just use a VPN though, avoids that entire can of worms

And most seedboxes are unlikely to be matched to a specific identity unless the box provider cooperates, which looking at their reason for circumventing ISPs I’d guess won’t really happen unless ordered to by court.

actually making linux usable with the deck controls was probably more work than locking the users out of the desktop mode even

neshura, to linuxmemes in The most secure OS named windows
@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

Because, in addition to the other valid points raised, modern “Anti”-Virus Software is often worse than an actual Virus.

There are way too many pop ups, the menus are confusing and constantly try to upsell you. If you want to remove the damn thing usually it doesn’t work, or doesn’t work completely, or has a separate auto-updater that reinstalls it after the next boot.

False positives screw you over good (Kaspersky killed the Ethernet Network on a buddy’s PC. He couldn’t use the internet on it until he managed to remove that piece of shit from his system completey) and are not less frequent than with Windows Defender but certainly more annoying (see above example)

If you paid a subscription getting rid of that is a pain as well (BitDefender tried to scam me out of 130€ by sending the billing notif to an email address they shouldn’t even have anymore)

Not all of them are shit like that but most are so sticking with the preinstalled Windows Defender that does 95% of the alternatives results in users having a better experience.

neshura, to linuxmemes in So sad when it happens
@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

Yes because Valve maintains their own compositor. You can enable that HDR support on desktop as well through some workarounds but it’s not really usable outside the SteamDeck yet.

neshura, to asklemmy in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?
@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

Advantage is if this thing slides in a direction the majority disagrees with it can be forked. On reddit all changes had to be accepted or you could leave. With lemmy and ActivityPub it's easier to fork the service and have it run in semi parallel to the OG. (Granted forking should only really be done if shit goes sideways)

Edit: besides, due to the open source status the community has more of a say in where things go

neshura, (edited ) to piracy in Sony Steals Customers' Purchased Content - Piracy is COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED!
@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

Raubmord is what we call a murder resulting from a busted/discovered robbery, essentially just escalating the consequences of the robbery further.

What I think OP is getting at are the absolutely ridiculous penalties you get for “stealing” something that physically doesn’t exist in a way we can grasp and cannot be reported mssing once “stolen”. I’d probably guess you’d be easier off actually stealing a movie from a store selling blurays than downloading it and getting caught so the renaming OP did fits perfectly imo

neshura, to linux in KDE Plasma - Is it possible to show the user running a GUI in its window title ?
@neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

Not sure if possible but have you checked whether the running user is an application property? If so you could maybe manage it via application or window rules.

Can’t check rn because I’m away from my PC but it’s worth a shot checking imo.

neshura, to linuxmemes in Distros bad

Didn’t know about that, would go into the same category as Arch then.
