otter, to piracy in Z-Library Blog: "Unprecedented seizure of our domains with books on rare languages"

Instead, they were separate sub-projects, containing only books in rare languages of the world

All of this is a priceless heritage, contributing to the preservation and study of world cultures, and serving as important material for researchers in linguistics, anthropology, and history.

I’d be curious to take a look once it comes back up

Also I’d rather there was a separate option for additional privacy than it be the default.

People who want the extra privacy can usually figure out what they need and how to get it. The average person will just switch back to chrome when websites break. They wont be able to figure out which settings to toggle off in order to fix the site

Keep Firefox useful for most people while also building more privacy friendly features.

If it’s something people SHOULD be using, have a popup explaining it and let people decide

Maybe not during the surgery, but it’s pretty normal to do some review before a surgery that hasn’t been done recently.

In the past they’d skim the books, but videos provide additional insight nowadays. A lot of those videos are published on YouTube

So it feels weird, but it’s not. You’re (most likely) in great hands

Oh also @Thisfox

Instead of Telegram, consider one of these, it’s easier to switch to the good one now than to try and switch again later.

otter, to privacy in A question about secure chats

This is the privacy community, and they were discussing the privacy aspect.

The concern isn’t about getting your chats leaked, there’s no incentive to just give away data that is collected. The concern is usually about a malicious group (company, government, criminals) abusing the data that they can get their hands on.

otter, to linux in Audacity 3.4 Released with Music Workflows, New Exporter, and More

There was a Lemmy post with a video about how things have changed, which I even commented on, but I can’t find anymore.

What I remember was that yes they did address most of the concerns. There were some issues still (unrelated to data collection iirc), and there’s one other fork that’s being maintained if you don’t want that

Edit: I think the was the video, I don’t want to watch it again but I’ll link my TLDW if I find it: m.youtube.com/watch?v=QfmDn1IaDmY

otter, to asklemmy in Is Lemmy as a platform sustainable?

Donations or grants would probably be best. I’m sure there are community grants available for doing public good.

I’ve also seen some open source things sell merch, where you buy a hat or something with a particular logo. It’s still donating with extra steps, but it’s a little different

Our instance admin broke it down recently, and it’s actually not too expensive to run. Without wasting money on engagement, growth, data collection, marketing, etc, it’s not actually that expensive to run social media platforms I guess

I love it, would like to read more but the name is a little blurry

edit: I had fun and got carried away, but here are a few of mine (+ descriptions and posters)

I’d rather we use some other term for it instead of disinformation. Even if the official definition works, it’s unnecessary confusion

otter, to privacy in A question about secure chats

Wider context matters

Two companies can advertise lockers with the same high quality lock, but one might still be better to use

  • if one company can’t prove they are actually using the high quality lock
  • if one company acts as a middleman, doing the locking/unlocking for you
  • if one company watches everything you do before and after using the locker, allowing them to infer what you are using it for

Even if we specifically talk about security, one is better than the other.
