MAS*H was an amazing show and it was moments like that that had a lasting effect on my world view. I did not realize it as a kid watching it, but I do now.
This is what I do also. Can be a hassle switching and finding an IP with free quota but it has worked for me so far. I do not DL a lot though nor do I automate the process.
Since you are looking to play single player you might also want to check out Minetest with the Mineclone2 addon installed. It is not identical, but it is an amazing substitute and free.
