I'm really proud of my city for reaching the top. Next year there will be a fresh round of elections. Fingers crossed for the current mayor to get another term....
@sarmale exactly. I saw on r/RedditAlternatives that someone created a Lemmy instance that was defederated from everyone - so it is possible to turn your Lemmy server into a walled garden. Maybe an allowlist would make for a better middle ground.
@detectivemittens I may sound like a broken plate but I think it's precisely the situation in Ukraine that is giving them hopes. Had the US not put on hold that package for Ukraine, the Chinese could have simply taken a more moderate stance towards Taiwan. By doing what it did, yea, as you said, the US showed its weakness in providing its allies and partners with the required military help.
If there’s one phrase that has echoed in the back of my mind, it’s that I have no family, and by that I mean no children or spouse - and I’m middle aged....
@taanegl whatever you do, don't stay at home. This is a great opportunity to travel places. I spent my previous two Christmases alone in my house and I felt miserable. Try going to some place where you could go in the morning or return to the evening if you don't afford/cannot get accommodation. Or, if you can, book a ticket in a sleeper train in one day in the evening, and another in a sleeper train back in the evening of the next day (that way, you could combine the cost of the accomodation with that of the transport, and you could come out cheaper and save time). Try getting through all the best parts of that place - maybe check for information about that city on Wikipedia or anywhere and take some photos (it could also be an opportunity to get into photography if you want. That'll help you out as well. Then start categorizing your pics into a photo management program, you'll keep yourself busy a lot).
As for me, I think I have enough chores to do to keep myself busy. Plus some movies to watch and a book to finish.
@ninjan Clearly not, lol, not at all. The guy is not a newcomer in politics, either. He's previously served as a prime-minister until 2014 and then has been the President of the European Council, so I'm not seeing him go anywhere close to Donald Trump, unless I'm missing something.
I am in the process of moving out some contacts from Google Contacts, specifically those that I do not have a Gmail address. It's a way for me to give these people a tiny bit more privacy, as I'm doing a cleanup of my contact list. My concern is that Google will still keep their data even after I delete it from my end. Is it so?...
@lemann Thank you! Yea, many of my contact's emails are probably on Yahoo instead, so it's not that much of a biggie. I know nobody using Tuta or Proton or whatever. And probably they no longer care since most people use their emails only for logging in to websites that don't support SSO with social networks/Google and just outright create a new email if they forget their password to that. But hey, less data for Google is still less data for Google.
I need some books paywalled behind Oxford Politics Trove and they aren’t on Anna’s lib, Zlib, Libgen, Memory of the World, Aaarg, or the Internet Archive. Not sure to whom else to turn to. I hate that knowledge like this is paywalled, and I highly doubt the authors will be paid if I pay the highway robbery of a price.
@IoSapsai Ah, yes, a classic. They can never be ready for winter. When you hear that, just run (or go skying like our president does, whichever is more convenient).
