psud,

Skilled programmers can see that Linus is an expert. It works in tech. It probably works in any professional environment - anywhere where skilled people are picking someone highly skilled.

For the average person, we have clearly seen average people suck at picking expert leaders, though it works fine in small groups

psud,

I and my wife have both watched all of Star Trek individually before we met. When new trek appeared we rewatched everything before watching all of new trek, good and less good, together

psud,

I reckon Voyager was the best of the star treks

psud,

I grew a bushy beard over 2020, then when masks were recommended I shaved to a moustache

My wife wanted the beard back “sorry hon, that stops the mask working”

Now 2024, still mo. I like it

psud,

That was my dad in the Navy in the '60s. The rules were you could have facial hair, but if you wanted to go from clean shaven to facial hair you needed permission and you had two weeks to grow it - if it wasn’t good enough you had to shave.

He couldn’t grow a beard in a fortnight. I can’t grow a beard in a fortnight.

So he applied right before going on leave so he would have 4 weeks of leave + 2 weeks to grow the beard, which was sufficient

psud,

If I grow a beard, and wish to satisfy my wife’s preferences, my only choice is a wild beard

psud,

5 o’clock shadow? Try 3 o’clock stubble. Right after shaving there’s shadow when your beard is black.

Fred Flintstone style

psud,

Weather wants your location so you can get weather for where you are

psud,

I give a few apps background location access, and for a couple of weeks after enabling each android would occasionally ask if the app still needs background data

psud,

Pixel 6 on current version

psud,

Then deny location access

psud,

Do you know if 4k80 is complete yet? Their website suggests it might not be

psud,

Back when I was 6, in 1983, my uncle who worked in the oil industry told me about global warming.

I could totally have been a real radical environmentalist, but I was 6.

A second time around that talk would have an impact, and with some foresight for the next 40 years. I think no one would be surprised if I devoted everything to fixing global warming - they might be surprised at my success in the stock market.

WYR have $10M or be a 6 year old undocumented orphan, unrecognised by everyone you knew

It’s clearly go back in time

The choice is

  1. $10M cash right now; or
  2. Practically infinite money, but you have to relive childhood
psud,

Taking them in the best order will be hard since the blue pill or its 10M would be left in the old timeline - or if there’s only one timeline, left in the lost future

You could take the blue pill and live it up for however long, try not to die suddenly, then take the red pill. That sounds risky to me

psud,

You could run away, roll the dice on the foster system

psud, (edited )

More than 10M gives you the ability to change popular opinions, spur good industries, kill bad business

Enough more lets you hire people who can help spend the money effectively

psud,

Clear outcome? If red is “become undocumented child in 2023” blue can’t be simple.

Blue would have you watching over your shoulder for who the money was taken from, or the money would be taken off you as evidence of crime, since no one has millions from nowhere, and it’ll be very hard to hide

psud,

Monkey paw is supposed to suck, not be instant death

psud,

Tape is just as susceptible to magnets, though it is a more stable medium. It’s not like they’ll be exposed to significant magnetic fields though

psud,

I don’t think many of us are significant enough to change anything, at least until we time travel with intent to make enough money to fix some of the problems of now

psud,

Have you any ideas how enshittification can be prevented without preventing Slashdot and Reddit? Like you can’t make a non commercial rule without making a more barren internet. Maybe the best you could do is get a Lemmy-like thing up and open source before Reddit could emerge

psud,

Workers co-op is a good model for worker rewarding structures

psud,

Sure. When did you first hear about it, and that it was caused by burning fossil fuels?

psud,

I guess if you’re in the perfect partnership you and your partner could simultaneously take the red pill :)
