sir_reginald, (edited ) to privacy in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?
@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

thanks! if implemented correctly, this is a decent way of verifying age. Although I’d rather not have any but it’s definitely better than taking a selfie.

isn’t the id unique? which means that sites can trace every visit you make and what videos you watch every time?

@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

there is no chance you would get back to the Intel system and plug it in every 2 hours.

don’t be irrealistic. most laptops in the Macbook price range will have 8 hours of usage in low consumption mode or around 6 or 5 if you need more power.

and at that price point they come with at least 32 GB of RAM which can be upgraded, swappable SSDs with more capacity than the macbook’s, far better keyboard and more ports.

the Macbooks do have some extra performance per battery usage? yeah I guess. But after 2 years that the battery life is gone, you’ll probably be buying the newer model or wishing that you bought a laptop with a replaceable battery.

they are downvoting you, but you’re absolutely right.

they can’t hardly be repaired and it’s impossible to upgrade them at all, even something as basic as swapping the SSD needs desoldering. They are still sold with 8 GB of RAM as the base and they can’t be upgraded.

it isn’t worth it at all.

sir_reginald, to piracy in Amazon and Tolkein Estate force author to destroy all copies of his work. Only pirated copies will survive.
@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

not exactly. You can of course still get existing works by pirating them.

But if the Tolkien works entered the public domain, anyone could use them for any creative purposes freely. And yes, a lot of the new material would be trash. But some excellent works would appear to.

A good example of this is Lovecraft’s works and the Cthulhu Mythos, that although not public domain until recent years, Lovecraft encouraged others to use his own creations on their own stories, thus expanding the literary universe of his own creation. Some stories are awful, but there has also been a ton of great works based on Lovecraft’s creations that couldn’t have existed otherwise.

sir_reginald, to privacy in How much privacy will I lose if I switch to e/OS
@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

it depends.

you’ll definitely be loosing security, which can turn into loosing privacy if you get affected by malware.

you’ll also be loosing privacy if installing proprietary apps, since GrapheneOS has features like storage scopes and a better permission system that help minimizing privacy issues.

I think that locking your bootloader in a Pixel is possible regardless of the ROM you install.

Anyway, I think that there’s no real benefit of installing any other custom ROM in a Pixel other than GrapheneOS. You’ll be just loosing out in security and potentially privacy for no real reason.

I know that Resident Evil games come with Denuvo, for example.

Which search engine do you use? If FOSS, which engine do it use? VPN?

There’s a relevant difference here. If the proprietary software runs on the server side and everything on the client side it’s free software, that’s very different than running a proprietary web browser on your own machine.

So as long as my search engine does not execute proprietary JavaScript and I can connect to my VPN using the OpenVPN or Wireguard client, it’s okay.

Nonetheless, it’s of course very much preferable that the server side is free software too.

I don’t care if the proprietary software comes from a mega corp or a small startup. It’s still proprietary.

Not all what is proprietary soft is crap

You’re wrong. For privacy, being proprietary is one of the biggest red flags.

nor all FOSS is the panacea

That’s absolutely true tho.

@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

didn’t you read my comment? That whole post is marketing excuses for not being free software.

Try compiling the “source code” they release and tell me if you get a usable version of Vivaldi.

sir_reginald, to privacy in Librewolf but like... for chromium?
@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

it’s more than enough for the very few sites not working in Librewolf.

sir_reginald, (edited ) to privacy in Librewolf but like... for chromium?
@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

Vivaldi is not private. A good browser? It surely is. But it’s not private.

It’s also proprietary software, which is unacceptable. And yeah, don’t repeat to me their marketing techniques. Yes, they release some partial source code. In practice, that’s the same as releasing nothing. Just a marketing trick.
