thisbenzingring,

this is so freaking good, I cannot tell you how often I am told I have all the data and I should be able to make xyz work

and I am just a recently hired systems administrator that has to deal with my bosses paper notes and the person I replaced lack of documentation

thisbenzingring,

the trick is just learning how to tell people No

its a balancing act that takes some finesse and if you are going to be a manager soon, you might look into how it is done

Im not sure if I could explain it but it usually involves listening to the request, rewording the request and repeating it back. And then explaining the situation as you see it (why you will say no) and then when they have understanding of the situation, you explain why you are saying no.

From my personal experience, this works out pretty well but there is always that one off that blows up in your face. When that happens just face it head on and as time goes on it usually gets better and requires less work when you have to say no

thisbenzingring,

You get a lot more transparency with the other init systems. Systemd is a big system that does lots of things and it’s not always possible to see everything it’s doing, because it’s doing a lot.

thisbenzingring,

Find one used and be willing to tear it down and put it back together. Print extra parts once you have the process down. Prusa has kits if you’re willing to pay for a premium. Both assembled and built it all from parts.

Good 3d printers will have good instructions for repairs. Putting it together from parts is what you should really consider doing. Because 3d printers have a lot of movement and that needs to be corrected at times. If you spend the initial time to assemble it, breaking it down to fix something isn’t something to stress about.

Either way it’s a rollercoaster of an experience. Once you feel like you’re comfortable doing the first prints, you will look deeper into the abyss…

thisbenzingring,

When I was young life was pure chaos. It was a constant battle and I often looked for things that would ground me and let my mind rest for a bit. I discovered the Peter Gabriel song Washing of the Water. I really liked how he sang it and so I memorized the words. They are good and when its a very dark time for me, the words are a great way for me to gain a little mental peace.

The whole song is beautiful. The perfect balance of wanting calm in hard times and finding peace in the nature of things piped.video/watch?v=Ic4N6rT6Qks

thisbenzingring,

May I suggest a reading of the Voltaire book Candide? Phrases like “Everything will be ok” or as the book often suggests “all is for the best” in the “best of all possible worlds” will take on a whole new meaning.

The book is funny most of the time but it has a very sharp cynical edge about life and positive thinking and how it doesn’t mean much in the face of most life changing events.

Fellow Extreme Weather Lemmings, what are your Buy it for Life winter boot suggestions?

We got my husband some Helly Hansen boots the year before last and we noticed a hole in them last year. I am right pissed. If I’m dropping hundreds of dollars on boots, I expect to get my money’s worth. What are your awesome boot suggestions to help me do just that?

thisbenzingring,

I’m a big Solomon brand fan. Idk if you can buy it for life winter boot and use it too but the Solomons I have had wear well and last as long as I have expected them to

thisbenzingring,

She suggested you take one of those little blue pills

and then handcuffs you to the bed

And then…

thisbenzingring,

I was a network administrator at a site, which just made me a glorified system admin with responsibility for the network and switches.

Everyone in the IT Dept had the password for the switches. After one person gave a 3rd party vendor the password, I had to change the passwords and exclude him from having it… but then everyone else got the password.

That place was nuts, between that and a few other stupid boss actions, I just moved on. Found a much better job and it was for the best.

thisbenzingring,

You ever met one of those people that proudly tell you they have never seen a Star Wars movie? Fuckin losers!

thisbenzingring,

Vader in Jedi Survivor 2 is a massive asshole… It’s fantastic that you know how to beat him, there’s only one good method, yet I have spent hours trying. This is the way. Vader should be almost impossible yet clearly not.

thisbenzingring,

do or do not, there is no try

Fuck you. That was meant for a Jedi master not your fucking IT systems admin

thisbenzingring,

I’ve played before anticheat was a thing and it is meaningless. Cheaters are going to cheat. The best anticheat systems are voting. The game kicks a winning vote total and then that server sends the rest of the servers it’s results. Then that account is flagged as a cheater. The only way a cheater can exist is they hide and don’t cheat and are obvious in it
