pizza party? We just had a terrible incident take most of our profit margin, money is tight right now. I want you all on brain storming sessions how thos happened and how we can prevent this. Unless your solution involves management listening to workers warnings three month before the problem got out of hand. I won’t here any of this, while enjoying my salary increase for quick and decisivie actions against serious threats to the company.
Why decompress on the fly? For a lot of things the crazy high-res textures aren’t needed or appreciated while playing. I downloaded some newer FTP Quake title. It had 30 fucking GB for like a dozen maps or so. It is a god damn arena shooter. You are way to busy jumping around, making fast paced shots and so on, to ever appreciate that the texture is still detailed, when you are pressing your virtual face against ist. And it takes so much more ressources because the texture needs to be loaded in the VRAM and then scaled down anyways because you aren’t pressing your face against it.
For what its worth most of the carbon from back then has been sinked into the ground, and while we extracted and burned enough of it to fuck the climate, it is nowhere near enough to have caused a relevant change in the atmospheric oxygen concentration.
As someone who dabbled a bit with it about two years ago:
It is extremely detailed. It goes to the level that you can manage the construction of new buildings by allocating the right ressources and machines to the construction site in the correct order. Of course you also have to plan your bus lines, train signal controls, electrical grid and so on in detail.
With that much detail it is also quite ressource hungry, so i had to stop as my towns started to lag at about 5.000 inhabitants.
Bonus points if you have some cultural connection to the eastern block. I recognized many things, from prefab buildings, over cars and trains even up to the lamp posts from my country.
Our existing antibiotics would be perfectly fine, if they were used responsibly instead of mass breeding resistant bacteria to mass breed animals under terrible conditions because capitalism.
In the same wake climate change would be much easier to deal with if the economic system wasnt designed around infinite growth of production and consumption.
You realize that there is a history outside the US? Granting homesteads to settlers on previously unused land has happened quite regularly throughout history all over the world. It even went as far as inviting foreign settlers, who were renown for having desirable trade skills.
From the top of my head there is German originating communities in Russia and Romania and French and Dutch originating communities in Germany because of such measures in the 15th to 19th century.
That the land was previously owned by some monarch doesn’t invalidate the fact, that in its times it was a quite social measure and gave people opportunities they’d otherwise lack.
The second image equally applies to the 50s, 60s and 70s in many western countries, a time where factory labor was mostly free of child labour. Also the comic does show a progression, which of course is a number of periods in time that are limited. I’d argue these times of panel 2 are still very relevant, especially as they mark the divide in perception and action between boomers and earlier generations and generations that are currently in their 20s-40s
I think both of you are not considering two major aspects:
Farming can feed more people on a given fertile area than hunting and gathering can.
Farming is area exclusive, e.g. there is a set amount of people farming in one area and considering this area to be theirs, excluding everyone else from usage.
It is very much possible, that in terms of providing food for the existing population both are equally viable. But with farming you could create larger more densely packed populations, which in turn provided means to exclude others by force. So while hunting and gathering was not necessarily a bad way of life, it did not allow for imperialism and was subsequently diminished by the imperialists.
And they existed about 2000-1000 years ago. Humans started settling and farming as far back as 10.000-12.000 years ago.
Of course by then populations have increased tremendously. But in the spirit of the meme that probably wasn’t the best overall course of action, was it?
And for that kind of fishing you need large vessels, built in stationary warfts, using stationary ports. The materials are made in stationary complex apparatusses to extract and shape metals from ore and the ore is mined in stationary mines.
All of this is only possible as a result of settling
The thesis was that people settled because it was superior in terms of supplying the population back then. All i was saying is that at the time that mustnt have been the case. It was more effective in the capitlaist/imperialist/expansionist mindset that is fucking is over now.
Of course with the current 8 billion people living on earth a nomadic lifestyle is not viable. But that is a very different question from the question if it was viable 10.000 years ago, when there were maybe a few hundred thousand to a few million humans on earthin total.
I totally agree. Thats why i made the argument “for an existing population”. In order to support a growing population changing to farming was the right choice. But not all populations had the ambition or necessity to grow, as we see with many indigenous people that survived quite well until being met with expanding settler societies.
So hunting and gathering wasnt necessarily an inferior lifestyle in terms of running a stable society. Qnd in the long haul it is very much possible that humanities growth leads to its downfall so severely, that a nomadic lifestyle will reemerge as it tends to be more environmentally sustainable.
I find this so funny, how a lot of “Boomer media” makes such a fuss about discovering that Gen Z ist also just normal people, with some more progressed ideas and ideals but also tired of being overloaded with information and media.
I think part of it now is that they also realize that half of the fads they have been making up about how the youth of the 2000/2010 era with how sex, violence and drugs craving it alledgely was, were just bullshit.
This i can understand though. It is not that the sex itself would be immoral. It is that putting the sex into the context of this violence is immoral.
And i have to say i find this important. Sex to me is an expression of affection with my partner and “sacred” for that. I don’t want it tainted with the banality of pornography or the psychotic issues that make people connect sex and violence.
I find it more weird that your coworkes talking about trying to get a child results in you imagening them “raw dogging”.
When one of my coworkers had a child born i also didn’t make a point of imagening the delivery process. I just congratulated them and asked them jokingly how much sleep they caught the last night.
Those were the Nerds, the weirdos that spent halft their free time on a computer and talking about how to get faster internet. For the “cool kids” i think a lot were the magazines or someone stealing a VCR from their dads private collection.
