Why decompress on the fly? For a lot of things the crazy high-res textures aren’t needed or appreciated while playing. I downloaded some newer FTP Quake title. It had 30 fucking GB for like a dozen maps or so. It is a god damn arena shooter. You are way to busy jumping around, making fast paced shots and so on, to ever appreciate that the texture is still detailed, when you are pressing your virtual face against ist. And it takes so much more ressources because the texture needs to be loaded in the VRAM and then scaled down anyways because you aren’t pressing your face against it.
As someone who dabbled a bit with it about two years ago:
It is extremely detailed. It goes to the level that you can manage the construction of new buildings by allocating the right ressources and machines to the construction site in the correct order. Of course you also have to plan your bus lines, train signal controls, electrical grid and so on in detail.
With that much detail it is also quite ressource hungry, so i had to stop as my towns started to lag at about 5.000 inhabitants.
Bonus points if you have some cultural connection to the eastern block. I recognized many things, from prefab buildings, over cars and trains even up to the lamp posts from my country.
Those were the Nerds, the weirdos that spent halft their free time on a computer and talking about how to get faster internet. For the “cool kids” i think a lot were the magazines or someone stealing a VCR from their dads private collection.
That is nice and could contribute in certain locations. Manually de-seaweeding significant reef areas would require more than some volunteers though. Maybe the govs could pay people to do it professionally? It will probably run much cheaper to maintain natural reefs than dealing with the damages from storms.
ahh yes. Because the Israeli army has literally no options between “relentless bombing of Gaza, denying access to food, water and medicine, sniping civillians trying to flee according to your demand on the safe routes you designated and bombing ambulances trying to move patients in the same way” and “doing nothing and watch Hamas regroup.”
Israel could have led an infantry assault into Gaza withou pounding everything first. That would have meant higher casualties though and here shows the true nature of Israels government and army.
They do not care for any palestinian life. So far for every Israeli soldier that got killed, more than 200 palestinian civillians were killed.
In world war 2 the axis powers killed about 6 civillians for every axis soldier and the allies killed about 1 civillian for every 4 ally soldiers. So the war that was about total destruction and genocide still had more than a magnitude less civillians killed relative to combatants killed.
In the “capitalism did better than communism/socialism” debate i still feel a great lack of historical context. Eastern Europe has been largely destroyed by the Nazis. China has lived through brutal Japanese occupation and a genocide of 10 Million people. Korea has been subject to a war emplyoing terrible new weapons such as Napalm to bring great destruction.
Meanwhile the US homeland has been faring without any destruction, France surrendered quick enough to avoid most damage and the UK sucessfully fended off the Nazi attacks so the damage was limited.
Purely economically speaking the Western allies were off to a much better start than the Eastern countries. So i would argue that for the economical question, it remains impossible to claim capitalism to be superior to socialism. Otherwise authoritarianism is always to the detriment of the people.
And they did so in Europe. Which means that people with this family names were Jews coming from Europe to Israel and not from Arabic countries like the comment above claimed.
And it fucking shouldnt be the case. Ensuring basic humanity and human dignity should be a key matter of the federal government and not delegated to the whimps of states opinions on waht constitutes human rights.
For what its worth most of the carbon from back then has been sinked into the ground, and while we extracted and burned enough of it to fuck the climate, it is nowhere near enough to have caused a relevant change in the atmospheric oxygen concentration.
