user224, to selfhosted in Does anyone else harvest the magnets and platters from old drives as a monument to selfhosting history?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I will keep the magnets if I ever get into this in the future, but not the platters. I’ll just safely destroy them and dispose of them.

So far I only had 3 laptops and no desktops. I had 0 HDD failures, since I only ever had 3 of them so far.
The oldest one is more than 17 years old 80GB 2.5" Fujitsu HDD.

I don’t even get to choose what I wear, so no.

user224, (edited ) to asklemmy in What is a niche interest or hobby you'd personally like to see represented more on Lemmy
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Software Defined Radio, Ham Radio, RF Electronics, amateur satellites and Meshtastic.

The only community I am (more than) fully satisfied with here is Linux.

Oh, but also communities like askdentists, psoriasis, etc. Those were pretty helpful on Reddit.

(i.imgur.com/kOnEf5O.mp4)

Tiež je možné embedovať video do komentára: ![]([https://i.imgur.com/kOnEf5O.mp4)

The only problem is, I’ll have no idea how the hell I was just able to time travel.
Anyone joining me?

When I was 4 or 5 my 300 pound dad fell on me on the street.
Not well.

I basically still have a broken nose since then. The bone is blocking my left nostril for the most part. When I was at the hospital, none of the doctors noticed my broken nose. I did however need to get X-Ray or CT scan (I don’t remember which one it was) done urgently. The “urgently” took a month. “Oh, look, your nose was broken. You’ll be able to get plastic surgery at 18 for free, since it limits your breathing.”

Anyway, I’d still have bleeding face scraped from the asphalt. Perhaps even broken rib(s). It’s not unlikely for that to happen in such case, and it’s not like anyone would notice.

But this seems to be nothing special.
My dad broke his knee, called an ambulance, they took him to the ER. Then they took an X-Ray of his knee, someone just told him “It’s not broken. Go to checkup in a week.” He also had to get home somehow, on his own.
Well, anyway, he went to that doctor for the “Checkup” right next day. He looked at the X-Ray, said it’s very obviously broken and will need a surgery.

He also had some problem with his spine, took over 10 years for anyone to look at it, at which point it was late. Now his left leg is basically paralyzed and he’s on strong drugs.

My grandma had a badly done amputation, it kept bleeding and oozing pus. She also had some infusions recommended, but the doc who recommended those said she’ll need approval from GP. But the GP would have to visit her at home as transporting her would be too risky. Response from GP? “Not worth it, she’ll die soon anyway.”

Anyway, this kinda turned into rant. At the very least my whole mouth would be bleeding as I keep accidentally biting my cheeks and tongue.

user224, to asklemmy in What prevents you from going to bed early?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The fact that I’d just stare at the ceiling till at least 23:00 EVEN THOUGH I WAKE UP AT 4:00 just to be tired the whole day as usual until the sudden energy boost around 18:00.

What’s the point of school starting at 7am?
The first class looks like this: Students sleeping on tables, teachers trying to not do the same, the only active group of people is the line at the coffee vending machine.
And the productivity remains greatly reduced for rest of the day.

1½ years ago it used to be 7:50. Apparently too late.
Meanwhile I recently seen a study that even 8:30 might be too early, and giving a new recommendation of 10am.

But it could be worse. I’ve heard from someone on Reddit that they start at 6am. What the fuck…

user224, to piracy in which software would i use on linux to capture video from disney plus for personal use?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I don’t know if they implemented something against screen recording, but I use SimpleScreenRecorder. But even VLC can do screen recording using the “Stream” option.

user224, to piracy in I have a DVD collection I want on my Jellyfin library. What software should I use for compressing these DVD files to sizes matching what you find at sea?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Perhaps Handbrake.

But if you do care about the quality, then you should just download those movies in higher quality than DVD. Like this you’re just getting 480p/576p with visible compression artifacts at the same file size.

user224, to asklemmy in What are your dental hygiene tips and hacks
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yep, you shouldn’t rinse your mouth, because a proper toothpaste has fluoride, which helps remineralize enamel. Keep in mind it won’t restore already decayed enamel though.

Anyway, I am not that sure about electric toothbrushes. At least it’s not necessary. On Wednesday when I’ve been on dental check-up, I asked my dentist whether electric toothbrush would be a good idea. She said “Well… it can be… but you already do pretty good job of cleaning your teeth, so I just recommend you stick to that.” I just use a regular toothbrush. However, just the brushing does take me a while. About 10-12 minutes. Yeah.

Well, something that could be a tip is xylitol chewing gum. Most sugar-free gums use xylitol. It is artificial sweetener that’s actually good for teeth. It helps remineralize teeth like fluoride, remove plaque build up, and it kills acid-producing bacteria. That is because the bacteria consumes it like regular sugar, but it can’t process it, so it just dies. You can also buy xylitol as a powder, because it’s, well, a sweetener.

Now to the disadvantages of xylitol: Consuming larger amounts (I think it’s just around 25g) can cause diarrhea and cramps. It is also extremely toxic to dogs. Just 100mg/1kg can cause them seizures and 500mg/1kg can cause death. Obviously that’s just approximate, so keep your dog away from xylitol.
