westyvw,

Uh, my server is an x86, is fanless and the cpu idles at 9 and maxes at 12. Is much faster then my pi and has quicksync.

I run plex, jellyfin, smb shares, mealie, tailscale and rerouting, notes, and books.

I like my pi but performance per watt isn’t as drastic with x86 if you build for it. Did I mention it’s also fanless? Passive heating that just works on the cpu.

westyvw,

Thats not Gnome. You need to remove the glasses. Hair is not an option. Two eyes, mouth, nose. That’s all you get. And you are not allowed to focus on all three, only one at a time can be shown.

westyvw,

Yes but clementine still has features not yet in strawberry.

westyvw,

Depending on how it’s packaged, the visualizations might be missing. I noticed that too.

westyvw, (edited )

Clementine. Strawberry is getting there but still doesn’t have as many features.

Edit: huh, I didn’t expect a downvote on Lemmy for my opinion. Is reddit leaking through? Weird.

westyvw,

I could, but you would think their own driver would work!

Not a pain on Linux at all. Printing is a breeze. As is scanning. Go figure.

westyvw,

My scanner/printer works flawlessly ij Linux. It’s fantastic. I cannot get it to work in windows, but no big deal I rarely use windows anyways.

But it is amusing that it simply will not work in windows.

And this printer is from 2023.

westyvw,

Is this potentially useful to me? Since it is persistent, can I use it on this motherboard I have over here that insists on using UEFI even if I do not want to?

westyvw,

There is a skit from Sat Night Live with Brian Cranston and Aaron Paul that is a spoof of their real lives as celebrities. Up to a point he is mild mannered, and then suddenly he gets very dark and serious. He is really good at portraying an aloof person and turning it on a dime. Point is in the that skit you certainly can see both.

westyvw,

Funny. I had a laptop that would do full speed and full security. But not in windows. They crippled the card with the driver, unless you paid more.

Ubuntu has caused me far more headaches and downtime than Arch. Go figure.

And to make this be a worthwhile comment: I wonder if it is because I use Arch (and derivatives) that Ubuntu causes issues. When something isn’t right, I try and fix it. In Arch I can. In Ubuntu it seems like a dozen paper cuts to get there and it may not work in the long run anyway. Oh the Snap doesnt have foo compiled in? No problem I can add it to the snap directory. No, that didnt work. Ok I will remove it and bring in a .deb file. Dependencies not met. Fine, I will compile it from source… and by that time I have wasted a TON of time.

westyvw,

Good news! Firefox is my primary browser, but I use vivaldi as a secondary browser and since it is on all the devices, I sync it for notes.

I use my steam deck as my portable computer instead of a laptop these days, and finally I can add vivaldi to it.

Awesome!

westyvw,

I think you mean different. I find the bouncing very normal after all these years. The spinning wheel and hourglass is there but they are used to indicate system waits, rather than launches.

Of course you can shut the bouncing launch off if you dont like it.

Micro***t Word on Linux and alternatives

Are there good Microsoft word alternatives that support Linux (I don’t mind closed source)? Libreoffice is meh and only office is quite good, but are there any better ones? Also, is there a way to install word on Linux using wine? When I do that my laptop just overheats and loses internet connection.

westyvw, (edited )

Really trying to understand what “meh” means in terms of office software.

They all are kinda meh. I dont get overly excited with office stuff do you?

Over the years I have used both Libre and ms office. Some use cases were so much better with Libre. Now days it’s kind of a wash really. You write words or you calculate cells. If you are calculating any large amount of cells do your self a favor and get it into a database.

And if it’s a presentation, reveal.js is miles better than PowerPoint.

What a sensational, over blown article. ArsTechnica this is shitty journalism and you should know it.

The headline would be about as correct if it said “SystemD update will bring Amiga’s Guru Meditation screen to Linux.”

This update has nothing to do with Windows. Error displays with additional information about the crash is not exclusive to windows, nor new. In fact a Kernel Panic screen happened in Unix.

westyvw,

Pizza hut huts $30 if you add 4 toppings. Pizza is stupid expensive anymore.

I said this about 2 weeks ago. I was trying to support Phoronix and was browsing on mobile. The site was unusable. They need to get control of that. I have websites and I refuse to ever run ads. Then again, I am not in it for the money.

On the other hand the number of websites that are using ChatGPT to create content, images, and links solely to push ads for profit is getting larger every day. It does not take any effort either. You can pay a monthly fee to have a service auto update your site and the ads are automatic too.

I am beginning to not trust sites that run ads.

westyvw,

I don’t know what OP used, but it could be any one of the Markdown presentation tools.

I like reveal.js

Your presentation can go in git, looks good anywhere, and easily shared. It’s just html rendered.

My PC is hacked

I just received a call from an indian microsoft technician. He informed me that my PC is sending a ton of error messages to microsoft. Most likely it has been hacked, and he would help me by remoting in and fixing the problem for me. I just wonder… Is it my PopOs or my Manjaro PC that sends all this info to microsoft?

westyvw,

There was a good version of windows 7 set up for this. Command prompts wouldn’t work right, and really messed with them if you gave then access.

I let one in once and managed to reverse the remote desktop and took over their computer.

That was fun.

westyvw,

Fairmail has a ton of features. I left k9 when it seemed like it was abandoned.

I am using both now that it is maintained again.

westyvw,

I want to support pharonix but damn, chill out ob the ads. Especially the video overlays on mobile. It is unusable without an ad blocker, while at the same time saying they are ad supported.

I would like to help, but ouch.
