How do you get an avatar on kbin.social?

Fiivemacs,

‘wait, Reddit has avatars?’ - said swathes of users who discovered Reddit added useless features to their site making reddit.com look like absolute shit compared to old.reddit

@SustainedChaos You go to profile dropdown menu-> Settings -> profile -> (scrolldown to) avatar. Select a file and press Save.

How do I block top level domains on kbin? For example, I only speak English so I would like to block *.de.

Nepenthe,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

Adding /d/domain-name-goes-here to kbin's normal web address will take you to that instance's "homepage" and you can block it there. For example, https://kbin.social/d/feddit.de

Keep in mind, this will only block posts coming from that instance, so you'll still be seeing comments from those users elsewhere, but it should take care of a good deal of it on your feed if you don't mind losing out on the three or four communities there that aren't in german

wafer,

Thanks for the help! I know how to block an instant but I'm looking to block every instance in the same top level domain, so anything ending in ".de" so that I don't have to manually block several instances. If it's not possible yet that's fair, I know Ernest has a shit ton on his plate.

What exactly are Reputation Points and how are they calculated? I've got mostly upvoted comments and a few boosts but I'm sitting at -3 and I'd like to know how it works and what it means.

VulcanSphere,
@VulcanSphere@kbin.social avatar

@Peruvian_Skies As for reputation point on kbin, it's currently broken.

@Peruvian_Skies

Currently reputation is calculated from boosts and reduces (downvotes). Upvotes are favorites and not counted. This will be changed iirc.

Trying to migrate to kbin, but have several small questions after using it for some minutes now.
Can anyone please expain how to ask simple questions within this magazine, like:

How can I ask questions here without posting a new link, photo, article or video?

Questions like:

  • How can I add magazines to my favourites?
  • How can I search a specific magazine (like RedditMigration for those quesions I have...)?

Finally:

  • Is there a more extensive user guide than kbin's user guide on Github?

Xepp,

@chris

Thanks! I still see "Add new article" on kbin.social and on fedia.io it is "thread" as you said.

Niello, (edited )

All of the options in + except making a new magazine is creating a thread. The "Add new article" is equal to making a text thread.

You should be able to find some useful guides or info if you click "top" on the homepage, or go to /m/kbinMeta and click top to find some useful guides. Out of those this one should be a pretty helpful start.

I don't think there is currently a way to favourite magazines but you can subscribe to them by clicking the button on the side bar.

Can anyone explain to me what a Microblog is and how is it different from a thread? Are they similar to what a Toot is on Mastodon?

anteaters,

Microblogging is the name for things like Twitter. You "blog" only small texts like the famous 160 characters of Twitter. A tweet or toot would be called micropost or just "status update". On microblogs you usually don't have threads but replies to a post. These replies and the initial post effectively form a thread but all the replies are also separate posts by the user.

ono,

Microblogging is tweeting, or tooting, or similar. Very short messages, usually from one person and directed to whomever happens to notice them.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microblogging

A thread is a collection of comments from people replying to one another, usually organized in a tree structure. It’s more like a conversation.

So I created a magazine (which is similar to a subreddit, correct?) - what now? How do I even find my own? They don't show anywhere in my profile nor do I see any moderator tools, etc.

kreynen, (edited )
@kreynen@kbin.social avatar

@acunasdaddy you can find magazines by searching from https://kbin.social/magazines. The Articles posted to the magazines you subscribe to show up in your feed. Microblogs are just aggregate content from the Fediverse. The moderation tools are limited, but what exists can be found by clicking the Magazine Panel button.

All of Kbin is very much a work in progress. A lot of things work as expected. Some don't. Be patient and pay it forward by helping others figure this out when you can.

I'm not familiar with Kbin much but just had a look at your profile from a not-logged-in person's pov. In the right hand sidebar are some stats about you including one that just says "moderated" with a 3 next to it. The 3 is a clickable link that seems to take me to a list of your created magazines.

Not sure if there's a simpler way to get to it when you're actually logged into Kbin though.

Gotta say, kbin.social is looking more like what I wanted from Reddit in the first place than Reddit does.... I may be dropping that account soon.
