My (30 M) girlfriend (30 F) buried all of my beans in the woods and won’t tell me where, causing a fight between us - April 7 2020

With all that is going on, we have stocked up on supplies, including some canned goods. I ordered a few weeks ago 30 cans of beans. 10 are black beans, 10 are kidney beans, and 10 are pink beans. Also, I ordered 15 cans of chickpeas. I thought this is a reasonable amount of beans and chickpeas to have every now and then and would last for quite some time.

However last night I opened the cabinet because I wanted to make a vegetarian chili using two cans of beans, but all of the beans were gone. What the hell?

I asked my girlfriend and she told me she buried all of the beans in the woods.

At first I thought she was joking, but she explained, no, she had buried the beans in the woods. WTF?

I asked her to explain and she told me she was afraid that “if things get bad” we might have to worry about “looters or whatever” and that the beans would be in danger of being stolen. I said I thought this was completely ridiculous and unlikely. She became angry at me and said she “is protecting our beans.”

According to her logic, the beans are safely buried in the woods behind our apartment complex, and if we ever need some beans she will go to the “stash” and dig up a can or two, but would prefer if we save them all for “if things get worse”.

I said why only bury the beans, why not bury our more valuable items? She said the canned food was most valuable for long-term means, and that since we get fresh food in our online grocery deliveries, it would make sense to continue to stockpile beans. She intends to go bury more beans in the woods every week.

This was too insane for me and I got very upset. I demanded to know where the beans were buried, and she refused to tell me. She said if I knew she was afraid I’d dig them up, I said damn right I would. She said “I will never jeopardize the beans.” I crossed the line and said she was out of her mind, she stormed away. We have not talked since last night.

I think it is completely ridiculous to bury the beans in the woods and I want to find them and dig them up, but apparently my girlfriend is taking this very seriously. How can I convince her to tell me where the beans are? And do you think I should convince her to get therapy or something or should I break up with her? So confused. Is this normal for a girlfriend to bury beans or otherwise hide them?

TL;DR - My girlfriend buried the beans in the woods and will not tell me where they are.

2 Days Later

The following day I tried to put my foot down, and I’m not usually a foot downer but there are rare issues where compromise is out of the question, and I foolishly decided this was one of those issues. I demanded to know where the beans were buried and I told her if she was going to bury beans I paid for in the woods that I would move out. We fought about it and I kept insisting.

In hindsight I should have just let it go and created my own hidden stash of beans in the apartment, and given her time to maybe cool down about this bean burying scenario, but I blew it all out of proportion. Yeah it’s weird to bury beans in the woods but why did I have to press it? What’s the harm at the end of the day? In the grand scheme of things? But I kept demanding her to take me to the beans, or at least draw a map or something, and finally she BROKE UP WITH ME. Over the beans. I have lost the love of my life because I couldn’t let the damn beans go. I am in disbelief. She moved out. Not only am I heartbroken but I am now paying full rent instead of 50% which is a huge financial issue for me.

TL;DR - I kept demanding that my girlfriend show me where she buried the beans in the woods and she got so angry at me that she ended our relationship and moved out. My heart is shattered and my finances are jeopardized because of a bean hoard.

minnieo, to asklemmy in What is the thing that has surprised you the most about the Fediverse?
@minnieo@kbin.social avatar

to me, it was surprising just how easy the fediverse was to understand if i stopped trying to think about it how i was taught to think by centralized platforms.

at first, i was really hesitant to migrate. i was confused by kbin, lemmy, mastodon, and especially the fediverse. i didn't think i could ever understand it. i wasn't confident in it. but, after a few hours of exploring, interacting, watching people talk about it and reading explanations, it clicked into place and suddenly made sense, a whole lotta sense. now, i am actually teaching others about what the fediverse is with little to no trouble and helping them migrate to kbin from reddit, and thats amazing. having tons of fun here! 👍

Do you have a reflow oven? Or simply with a hot air gun? How do you do it?

tbe, (edited )

Yeah I have such a small, cheap Chinese one (T962) that I modified and flashed a nicer firmware on.

I basically populated the bottom side (with more components) first after applying solder past with a stencil, then reflowed the board. After cooling down I applied the solder paste to the upper side (with the LED) by using a small needle on a syringe (because using a stencil was too weird since the board wasn’t laying flat) but since the pads are relatively large and not that many that worked fine. Then I placed the components on that side and simply run the reflow cycle again.

I started with the bottom side because there are no heavy components. I expected heavy parts to just fall off on the second reflow cycle so I tried to avoid that.

At the end I manually assembled the USB connector using a regular soldering iron and tons of flux gel.

teri,

Nice! Thanks for explanation! I don't have much experience with soldering larger circuits. Usually I'm stuck with a soldering iron and tweezers. Just recently got a used stereo microscope. That already helps a lot. But certain packages like BGA are out of reach this way.

tbe,

I was kind of afraid of SMD things in general a long time but I discovered they are (up to a certain size, 0603 is still okay for hand assembly if you’re patient) comfortable to work with. Even QFN packages are okay if you have access to a hot-air station. I did actually order an BGA sensor out of curiosity along with other things, looked at it and was like “hahaha, thanks, I probably better don’t design that thing into my circuit” (I think it’s a 5-WLCSP package).

I used a Chinese oven that looked just like that, maybe the same model. I found it uneven in its heating, so much so that paste near the door sometimes didn't flow. It was possibly a step up from my Black and Decker toaster oven.

tbe,

Mine is the smallest one of a series of these, it has two heating elements inside.

I don’t have it for that long but I didn’t have problems so far, I’m usually only making rather small PCBs tho. I did make some recommended modifications like replacing the paper insulation tape with a kapton tape, proper grounding and flashed another firmware.

I did only use a small hotplate and/or a hotair station, so it seems to be definitely a stepup here 😌.

Love the idea of using a USB C connector on a double sided board so you can use it with either side up.

Anomandaris, to RedditMigration in Reddit Blackout: -19% Comments/day and -9% Posts/day during the 48h
@Anomandaris@kbin.social avatar

Even though you've done some nice work here, I'm reluctant to take those figures, particularly the change percentages, at face value.

There are colossal numbers of bots submitting posts and comments which metrics like this can't identify, which dilutes the real numbers. Of course bots would not be able to post to private subs, but it's less clear how much of the remaining traffic is human and how much is bots posting to empty subreddits as per the dead internet theory.

JanoRis,

yeah you can't distinguish between bots and humans. But like said in the post, currently the top100 commenting subs only take part in ~10% of the total comments. This would fit with the dead internet theory imo.

But it is also important to note that for this info the comments/day numbers come from two different sources, so it is hard to verify the validity.

The comment numbers of the top100 subreddits are from subredditstats.com, while the total is from the script used by blackout.photon-reddit.com

For subredditstats.com there is no way to see how the data is obtained/tracked.

But the blackout.photon site has its source code available. I just have not enough programming experience to tell if the comments/min number is obtained by a direct api call, or if it calculates the comment ID Delta between each call that it does (it calls the most recent comment each minute).

dan1101,
@dan1101@lemmy.world avatar

The wording is sort of forceful, but I assume the goal of the question is to have the students empathize with how things were for a Chinese immigrant at that time.

festus, (edited )

Ehh it's testing the kids to see how much they learned of the racism Chinese people faced on the West Coast (North America) back then. It's also a good way to have students emphasize empathize with those experiences too by making them write from that perspective.

At the risk of sounding like a dick, I think the word you're looking for is "empathize."
