I heard a more snarky version:

In this you can see they’re about the same depth.

jmcs,

At a global scale, the Mariana Trench and the Everest are the same depth. It’s less than 20 Km of difference against a mean diameter of 12742 Km.

The original is a exaggerated estimate (projection) based on a assumed sphere, probably WGS84, because a lot of the global satellite data is formatted as such.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_map_projections?wpr…

Eheran,

“reality” as in extremely exaggerated deviations from the ellipsoid. Otherwise it would just look like a smooth sphere. Earth has 12’700 km diameter. From the shallowest point to mount everest are just about 20 km. That is a 0.15 % change. You would see nothing.

Bang on, the Pacific is not 250 miles deep…

kn0wmad1c,
@kn0wmad1c@programming.dev avatar

To put in perspective how shallow a 0.15% change is, a dimple on a golf ball is roughly 4 times deeper than that (0.60% of a difference in depth).

“Smoother and rounder than a bowling ball” is my usual comparison

Eheran,

I think that would be too much. A bowling ball is really smooth. It would not roll as well with such deviations all over the place.

At a diameter of 22 cm, the roughness would have to be in the order of 0.3 mm, which would not just be visible due to the distorted reflections, it would even be audible while rolling.

Kind of like the Cowpens flag with less stripes

mrh,
@mrh@mander.xyz avatar

Yes that is probably the most similar of all (real) US variant flags. Compared to Cowpens: less stripes, upright stars, one more star in the circle (14 vs 13 total), and the center star being larger than the rest.

Though perhaps the most similar other flag is the one used by Ulysses in Lonesome Road.

What is THE GAME?

lvl7,
interolivary, (edited )
@interolivary@beehaw.org avatar

I lost the game years ago, and soon you will have lost it too. It’s a 20 year old meme, but basically:

The Game is a mind game in which the objective is to avoid thinking about The Game itself. Thinking about The Game constitutes a loss, which must be announced each time it occurs. It is impossible to win most versions of The Game. Depending on the variation, it is held that the whole world, or all those who are aware of the game, are playing it at all times. Tactics have been developed to increase the number of people who are aware of The Game, and thereby increase the number of losses.

DAMunzy,

I remember the game being introduced to me whilst in highschool in the early 90s. It was introduced to me by my stoner friends. I lost it a few times during highschool because it was a thing along with getting punched if looking at the circle. I definitely lost it in 1997 when the movie The Game came out. I have lost it many more times as the years grind on.
